1 Welcome to Fourth Grade!

2 Daily Schedule Teachers pick students up in the hallway at 8:05 each morning. Students are considered tardy after 8:15. At this time, students will complete a Math Warm-Up and watch the Daily Morning Show.

3 8:30-9:45 Math 9:50-11:50 Reading/ Language Arts 11:55-12:15 Recess 12:20–12:50 Lunch 12:55–1:10 Science/Social Studies 1:10–2:00 Related Arts 2:00–2:50 Science/Social Studies 2:50–3:05 Pack up/Prepare to Dismiss

4 Lunch Procedures Students go to lunch following recess. After lining up, students separate into their various choices and wash their hands. The first ten minutes of lunch time is to be silent and students may then talk quietly.

5 Dismissal Procedures At the end of the day, students are reminded of what they need to take home to complete their HW. We also check the message board for any ‘going home’ messages.

6 Classroom Helpers Each of the fourth grade teachers assign student jobs in order to help our class run in an orderly fashion.

7 Lions that “ROAR” We have established procedures and expectations for all areas of the school based on the acronym ROAR.

8 R The first R in ROAR stands for Respectful. Examples of being respectful around the school and in the classroom include: using appropriate voice, respecting other’s privacy, being quiet and patient in line, and keeping the restrooms clean.

9 O The O in ROAR stands for On Task. Keeping the line together, completing assignments, using time wisely, and giving your best effort are all ways to stay on task.

10 A The A in ROAR represents being Always Prepared. Bringing materials to school, dressing appropriately, remembering lunch choice, and being on time and ready for school are ways to Always be Prepared!

11 R The second R in ROAR stands for Responsible. Being Responsible means honoring others’ personal space, always reporting problems to an adult, and keeping your area clean.

12 Incentives The focus of PBIS is rewarding positive behavior in students. –Students earn Lion Loot by following expectations. Once a week, students are able to spend their Lion Loot by purchasing items from the Lion Loot Store. –Students have the opportunity to participate in PBIS celebrations periodically throughout the year.

13 Consequences We use a variety of consequences. The first consequence is a verbal warning. Following this, students get a warning, accompanied with reteaching the expectation and walk 5 minutes at recess. After the third infraction, students visit the Reflection Desk. If the students return from the Reflection Desk, and still continue to misbehave they will receive an office referral, and parents will be contacted.

14 Reflection The purpose of the Reflection Desk is to give the student a chance to reflect on the behavior that got him or her to this point and make a choice to improve. Each student will have a form to fill out while reflecting, which will be sent home to be signed by a parent/guardian.

15 Recess Detention Daily Recess Detention can be assigned for various reasons: –Failure to complete homework –Failure to complete classwork –Behavior –Visiting the Reflection Desk

16 Parent Accountability Parents should be responsible for making sure that their child is prepared for school each day. Ms. Louden has developed a form that will be sent home when your child is sent to recess detention. If a student has been absent, please remember to send an excuse listing the reason for the absence. All changes in transportation need to be made in writing. Please remember to send a note, including the bus number or name of the person with whom the child will be riding.

17 Classroom/Parent Communication Parents may access information pertaining to this class by visiting the district website at www.greenwood52.org. Choose the elementary school, and the link, “Teachers.” Here you will find my name. Click on my name and you will find out important reminders and things going on in our class. www.greenwood52.org The Parent Portal is a great way to keep up-to- date with your child’s performance in the classroom. Grades are entered throughout the week and averages are accessible via the internet.

18 Classroom/Parent Communication Signed papers are sent home every Tuesday and are to be returned by Thursday. A fourth grade newsletter is sent home every Monday and includes important dates and topics for the week. Please make sure you sign the newsletter. The newsletter also contains information about the multiplication facts your child has to study for the week, 5 facts, spelling words, as well as whether or not they are Superstars. 19 Academics Fourth grade ELA and math builds on skills that have been learned in previous grades while introducing new skills. We are also implementing South Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards this year. Science and Social Studies classes introduce lots of new material to students.

22 Patterns and variables 2D shapes and figures Measuring to the nearest quarter inch, cm, and mm Converting measurements in the US Customary System Perimeter Elapsed time Recalling equivalencies associated with liquid volume, weight, time, and length Interpreting tables, graphs, and diagrams

23 Science and Social Studies Science and Social Studies will be taught in units this year. The time frame for these units vary from one to four weeks. Therefore, these two subjects will not be taught at the same time. Students will still receive plenty of grades in each subject area each nine weeks. We will be having weekly “Five Facts” quizzes in the subject being taught. Students receive their 5 facts each Monday, and the quiz will be the following Thursday.

25 Social Studies The fourth grade social studies curriculum focuses on major events in United States history through 1865. Some of these events include: Native American Explorers Colonization of North America Revolutionary War Beginnings of the US government Civil War
