2 DRUG TESTING 2002/03 2080 tests were conducted in SAIDS’ national testing programme. 42 positive tests of which 31% were for stimulants and 47,6% were for anabolic agents. 292 user-pays tests were conducted on behalf of international anti- doping agencies and sports federations. EPO testing took place for the first time at the 2002 Comrades Marathon.

3 KEY FOCUS AREAS An effective national drug testing programme across all sports codes. Education and information initiatives that are relevant, accessible, valid and measurable. Sociological research regarding knowledge, attitudes and use of performance enhancing drugs among South African sportspeople. International anti-doping alliances and collaboration on harmonisation and improvement of all anti-doping standards and practice.

4 EDUCATION AND INFORMATION 2002/03 Drug-Free Information Hotline. Website with links to the list of prohibited and permitted products in sport. Lectures and workshops provided to all target markets nationally throughout the year. Production and distribution of information and education material for athletes and sports federations.

5 CORPORATE AND INTERNATIONAL 2002/03 ISO 9001:2000 Certification. South Africa represented at major international conferences. SAIDS’ Board Members elected to WADA sub-committees. Assistance provided to other countries throughout Africa on anti- doping issues. Reciprocal testing agreements with Netherlands, Australia, Norway.

6 2003 - 2004 Minimum 2300 tests on national athletes from 54 sports codes and extended EPO testing. Additional sub-contract services to fund national anti-doping projects. Launch of sports drug education programme for school learners. Additional pre-Olympic education for elite athletes. Provision of training and assistance with the doping control programme at the All African Games in Nigeria.
