1 Lothian Road Dedicated Bicycle Patrol A Safer City. A Safer Neighborhood. A Safer Street.

2 Introduction 1.The brief: to present the benefits and costs of the deployment of a bicycle patrol service 2.The task: to work in partnership with the Lothian Road Residents and SAPS, to evolve the current and future security arrangements and make Lothian Road a safer place for all 3.How will this be achieved? By establishing a Community Security Scheme (CSS) consisting of a dedicated bycicle patrol

3 Benefits of a bicycle patrol officer Improved communication Deters criminals from the area by visible policing (Bobby on the beat) Offers peace of mind to the residents In line with the SAPS Sector Policing strategy Increases residents awareness of crime and their safety Improves the area as a whole Increases property values Increases community unity

4 Duties of the Security Officer Patrolmen are the eyes and ears of the community looking for suspicious persons and actions, or anything which may have the potential for criminal activity. Monitoring and challenging suspicious persons entering the area. They are in contact with our 24hr Control Monitoring Centre and surrounding armed response vehicles. Being on bicycle means that they can patrol places inaccessible by a car. They are also able to detect people hiding behind bushes and trees at street level. They will conduct initiatives whereby home owners oversights (e.g. open gates/garage doors/safety gates/vehicle doors, vehicle lights left on etc.) will be reported to our Control Monitoring Centre and logged. Armed response patrols increase in the area as the guards will be visited by the armed response officer and the supervisor.
