The Nervous System By: Rayza Arevalo

What is the nervous system? The nervous system is the system of cells, tissues, and organs that regulates the body's responses to internal and external stimuli.

Parts of the nervous system Central nervous system (CNS): part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord.

Parts of the nervous system Brain: The part of the central nervous system that is located within the skull. The brain functions as the primary receiver, organizer and distributor of information for the body. It has two (right and left) halves called "hemispheres."

Parts of the brain Frontal Lobe: Controls personality, problem solving, planning and organization. This part of the brain is still developing during the teen years Occipital lobe: Controls visual functions, color, and shape recognition Parietal lobes: Helps with written and spoken language. Temporal lobes: Mainly involved in visual memory (i.e., memory for pictures and faces) and verbal memory (i.e., memory for words and names). Cerebellum: Helps the body keep it’s balance.

Parts of the nervous system Spinal cord: part of the nervous system that runs from the brain down through the back and contains threadlike nerves that branch out to every organ and body part.

Parts of the nervous system Neuron: A nerve cell that sends and receives electrical signals over long distances within the body.

Parts of the nervous system Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): regulates key functions of the body including the activity of the heart muscles, the smooth muscles (e.g., the muscles of the intestinal tract), and the glands.

Parts of the nervous system Autonomic System: Deals with the functions of the body. Specifically, autonomic nerves are involved with the regulation of the heart muscle, the tiny muscles lining the walls of blood vessels, and glands.

Parts of the nervous system Somatic System: The portion of the nervous system that deals with the control of voluntary muscle and relating the organism with its environment.

How to care for your nervous system: Always wear your helmet when you ride your skateboard, bike, etc. Wear your seatbelt Get about 8 hours of sleep every day Don’t use drugs or alcohol. Wear appropriate headgear and safety equipment when you’re playing a sport.

Symptoms of a concussion Some symptoms of a concussion are: "seeing stars" and feeling dazed, dizzy, or lightheaded memory loss, such as trouble remembering things that happened right before and after the injury nausea or vomiting blurred vision and sensitivity to light slurred speech or saying things that don't make sense difficulty concentrating, thinking, or making decisions difficulty with coordination or balance (such as being unable to catch a ball or other easy tasks) feeling anxious or irritable for no apparent reason What should you do if a friend or teammate has a concussion? Tell someone quick. Even if the concussion seems mild, the person should rest for a while. If the symptoms are severe (like seizures or being knocked out) or the person seems to be getting worse, the person may have gotten a serious head injury. Get medical help right away.

Health triangle Mental/ Emotional Physical Social The nervous system controls your mind and emotions Without your nervous system, your body can’t function Your brain controls your personality
