1 What is your opinion on school uniforms in public school? Give one pro and one con! Must be 5 sentences.

2 “The Great War and it’s Aftermath”

3  Until 1914, there had not been any real European conflict.  However, many European nations were committing to the policy of imperialism and conquering/controlling foreign land.

4  Many Europeans nations joined alliances with one another:  Battle for European dominance  Likelihood of a war would break out 

5  1  June 28 1914, Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife of Austria-Hungary were assassinated by Serbians.

7  2  Alliances that were made between other European nations were put on alert.  Alliances- pacts/agreements made with people to protect each other

8 33  Germany was in an “arms race” against most other nations…  having biggest military and most weapons…militarism  No European nation prepared itself for this inevitable war more than GERMANY.

12  On July 28, 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia  refused to cooperate in the investigation of the murder of Francis Ferdinand.  Alliances in Europe were mobilized as the 1 st world war began.

15 Germany Schlieffen Plan- quickly destroy France Avoid a 2 front war…fighting on only one side of your country. To get to France, they illegally invaded Belgium. This brought Great Britain into war. G.B. used propaganda to ruin German reputation by calling them “barbarians” and “huns”

16 Germany Plan ultimately failed Belgians fought back Russia is then mobilized

17 Western Front French side Stalemate…evenly matched number of weapons and soldiers Trench warfare 500 miles of trenches, bunkers and barbed wire Bloody combat with little progress Gross conditions- rats, disease and corpses

18 “ No mans land”…in between enemy lines

19 Eastern Front Over 1000 miles of fighting…Russia More decisive battles fought and won Germany and Austria win initially

20  New types of warfare:  Machine guns  Artillery field guns  Poisonous gas  Submarines (U-Boats for the Germans)  Tanks and armored cars  Airplanes  Trench warfare
