Context Clues WordSentenceCorrect Dictionary Definition ChattelWhen you finish a day’s work, get money for it and never take provisions of chattel. An article of personal property that can be moved or transferred from place to place. DexterityDuring my eight years experience as a driver, I learned to handle the whip with marvelous dexterity and precision throwing the lash within a hair’s breadth of the back, the ear, the nose without however touching either of them. Skill in the use of hand and body. VividTogether the two present a vivid picture of how the slaves felt about slavery. Perceived as bright and distinct. DisengagedThis man disengaged himself from her with violent blows and kicks. To become free from something that holds fast. AscertainingThis information I carried to my master and after ascertaining the truth. To find out the truth.

Text Purpose I think the author wrote this book to inform you about slavery. From what is stated in the beginning of the book, it seems as if the author wrote the book for those who wanted to know about African American history.

Text Structure The text structure is in chronological order. Beginning in the 17 th Century slave trade, through the early 18 th Century in the height of slavery. To the late 18 th Century early 19 th Century, the Civil War and the ending of slavery.

Text Representation 1963:Julius Lester went to the library of Congress and spent several weeks going through the file cabinets of ex slaves interviews. 1964: The author was in Mississippi taking part in the Civil Rights Movement. 1967: The author wrote an article for Sing Out!, the folk music magazine about the new political and cultural phenomenon know as Black Power. 1969: To be a slave was recognized by the American Library Association as a Newbery Honor Book.

Author’s Perspective/Point of View SubjectAuthor’s Feelings Text Evidence SlaveryHe was not angry, but did feel a loss. I was not angry that my family tree ended at a bill of sale, but rather,I was overwhelmed by a sense of loss.

Main Idea ParagraphsMain Idea Beginning-Page #20The different ways they did slave trade. Middle-Page #79The way the slaves transformed their master’s religion into their own. End-Page #137A slave’s reaction to the news that he was free.

Supporting Details DetailsPage #Comments He knew whether he would have admitted it to himself or not that if he had been held slave he would have done anything to gain his freedom. 117 It shows that some slave owners knew what they were putting those poor slaves through, but they didn’t care because they owned them. It was in the United States that a system of slavery evolved that was more cruel and total than most any other system of slavery devised by one group of men against another. 27 What the United States did was unnecessary and cruel. I knowed nothing but to be driven and beat all the time. 89 The masters lead the slaves to believe that’s how they were suppose to be treated in life.

Draw Inferences What the Book SaysConclusions Drawn Situation:One of the house slaves heard that slaves were to be sold. Character Actions:The house slave warned the slaves about what was to come, and the slaves ran away. The house slave knew that even though he was an important slave he was still a slave. Therefore he had to warn the others for those were still his people. Situation:Every time this one slave gave birth her master would sell the child, and it would break her heart. Character Actions:When her fourth baby was born she gave it something out of a bottle and pretty soon it was dead. She didn’t want another one of her babies to be taken away from her and sold to have to go through life as a slave.

Compare-Contrast Title:To Be A Slave 1.Different stories from different ex- slaves. 2.Went deeper into the plantation settings. 3.How they got ready for the auction block. 4.How slaves got whipped, and how some just acted. 5.How they paid some ex-slaves to lie to other ex-slaves to work for free. Title:How slavery ended in America 1.One story about how slavery ended. 2.Union men vs. rebels 3.Decided slaves can become contraband of war 4.How the masters were scared of blood baths. 5.About three slaves rowing across a river started the ending of slavery. Both: 1.Few escaped 2.Segregation 3.Took the names of their masters 4.Described bucking formation 5.Talked about things that President Lincoln stated

Facts Page #Comments Slavery is over.29That’s wonderful, however they were not yet equal. There is a certain way to sell slaves. 43They should have never been sold. Slaves were property. 110They should not be able to buy humans. Slaves were given days off for the holidays. 28Those days off still doesn’t make up for all the days of torture through out the year. They feed the slaves well before it was time to sell them. 46They should have been feed well all the time.

Opinions Page #Comments These stations were highest points of honor. 90That is pretty bad because their expectations were so low. Them old hard shoes make to much noise. 109At least they had shoes. It might be hard handlin that cotton thread. 113Almost everything slaves did was hard. Lew flitted from one plantation to another, in the dead of night, preaching a crusade to Mexico, and creating a furor of excitement wherever he appeared. 118I don’t think slaves would have been to excited about that. After death they shall return to their own country rejoining their people and have pretty women. 88That is good they were looking forward to something.

Reading Response Mother got shot for slowing down. P.55. I have lost a love one before and I know how hard it can be let alone seeing it be done right before you. The church songs. P. 83-84. When you listen to the songs it makes you realize they knew what they were getting out of the religion they were taught. Yet once the slaves left the field, their work was far from over. P. 73. It reminds me of how I will work outside with my dad and come inside and do chores with my mom, but the slaves experienced much worse.
