Roosevelt Road: State to Columbus Public Meeting September 22, 2015

Project Area

Adjacent Neighborhood

Typical Daily Traffic Volumes 2 lanes in each direction is adequate capacity 22,000 – 23,000 vehicles could be one lane in each direction with turn lanes

Pedestrian Crossing Movements - Before Pedestrian Movements Large volumes of east/west movements Primary pedestrian path of travel on north side Significant amount of pedestrian activity with special events CTA intermodal connections

Michigan Ave. IntersectionWabash Intersection Ped Counts Michigan PM HoursWabash PM Hours Typical PM Peak Peak After Bears’ Game

Bus Volumes Roosevelt Station 5 Bus Routes on Roosevelt CTA Bus Stop – North Side: 3,200 Weekday boardings (2 nd highest in bus system) CTA Bus Stop – South Side: 2,400 Weekday boardings (9 th highest in bus system) CTA Rail Station – 12,000 Weekday Station Entries (8 th highest in rail system) Routes 12 146 18 130 192 12, 146 (north) 12, 146, 130 (south) Routes 29, 62 on State only

Bike Facilities Area Bike Counts Before – on street bike lanes on Roosevelt Roosevelt serves as a connector to the lakefront and the museum campus PM peak volumes on N- S streets feeding into Roosevelt are moderately high Along Wabash (N&S) 4-6PM: 142 bicyclists Along State (N&S) 4-6PM: 108 bicyclists

Divvy Divvy Bike Stations The Museum Campus Divvy station is one of the most popular start and end stations. This is especially true on weekends but also on weekdays during the summer. Start = 38,050 End = 41,133 Rank = 34 Start = 39,868 End = 38,542 Rank = 29 Start = 50,205 End = 52,001 Rank = 16

Project Objectives Enhance Pedestrian Environment Larger Sidewalks for Better Capacity (Transit & Special Events) Green Streets / Landscaping Improvements Safer Multimodal Connections Reduce or Control Jaywalking at Station Improve Transit Waiting Environment Provide Better Shelter / Waiting Area for Bus Stops at Station Accommodate Traffic and Bicycle Flows Multimodal Solution that Accounts for All Users Improve Aesthetics and Wayfinding Connection between CTA station and Museum Campus Enhance Visual Aspects of Corridor Provide Better Signage to Destinations

State Street to Wabash Avenue - Before 11’ 13’ 5’ 11’ 12’ 13.5’ Bus Lane Bike Lane 12’ 11’ 5’ 13’ 11.5’ Before Bus lanes, bike lanes, two through lanes and left turn lanes in each direction

Concept Plans State Street to Wabash Avenue - After Lane widths adjusted No capacity lost No change to cross section Sidewalks widened to accommodate transit users (from 10-11’ to up to 16 ½’) CTA STATION

Wabash Avenue to Michigan Avenue - Before 12.7’ 13’ 5’ 11’ 12’ 14’ Bus Lane Bike Lane 12’ 11’ 5’ 13’ 111.3’ Before Bus lanes, bike lanes, two through lanes and left turn lanes in each direction

Wabash Avenue to Michigan Avenue - After Sidewalks widened Bus lanes converted into pedestrian space on north side and right turn lane onto Michigan Ave. on south side Bike lanes relocated to north side at sidewalk level – provides extra pedestrian capacity during events and eliminates bike-vehicle conflict Narrow underutilized concrete median expanded to allow landscaped refuge island at Michigan Ave.

Markings will be done at night Markings being installed shortly

Michigan Avenue to Indiana Avenue - Before Before Westbound = right turn lane, 2 through lanes, left turn bay Eastbound = 3 lanes 8’ 12’ 11’ 12’ 17’-26’Planted Median 12’ 11’ 12’ 8’ 11’ Thru Lanes

Michigan Avenue to Indiana Avenue - After Capacity westbound unchanged, lengthened left turn lane and removed westbound nearside bus stop blocking right turn movement to northbound Michigan Ave. Narrowed median and used Park District land to continue off-street bike lanes Bike facility now links directly to Park District path to Museum Campus underpass Expand capacity of left turn lane onto southbound Michigan Ave. Eliminated eastbound lane to align with through lanes east and west, reducing weaving

Indiana Avenue to Columbus Drive - Before Before Bridge over Metra / South Shore 3 lanes westbound 2 lanes eastbound with right and left turn lanes 12.5’ 12’ 11’ 15’ 12’ Planted Median 11’ 12’ 12.5’ 12’

Indiana Avenue to Columbus Drive - After Capacity maintained with 3 lanes westbound and 2 lanes eastbound with turn lanes Added westbound left turn lane onto southbound Indiana Added crosswalks on east-north legs and pedestrian refuge island on east leg

Recent Traffic Concerns Roosevelt construction impacted traffic, less so after July but still occasional disruptions Recent events at the Museum Campus/Grant Park required street closures (e.g., Lollapalooza closed Balbo, Columbus, Congress, Wabash, & Harrison) Circle Interchange construction detours affecting area traffic patterns 2015 resurfacing projects in the area: Roosevelt - Halsted to State Halsted - Roosevelt to 14th Place Harrison - Financial to Wabash Loop Link Resurfacing on Canal and Clinton Signal timings at Roosevelt and Wabash intersection affected by construction; corrected in mid-August Transportation study for Museum Campus access improvements is on-going
