4 Seminar Structure What is Emotional Intelligence (EI) ?
The JCA EI Approach EI and Sustainable Impact for Organisations EI and Sustainable Impact for employability Questions

5 Maximising Performance
Has everyone see this before? (Briefly explain what it means if not) Historically, in the sector – solutions have been based around addressing the “interference” or “barriers”. Maybe the sector is focussing so much on the practical barriers – the things that are deemed to be “fixable” (the CV, the job search skills, the work experience). Maybe the blindspot has been “how people do or don’t manage their personality” –Emotional Intelligence. Personality drives behaviour, behaviour drives performance. If you cant manage your personality, you’ll struggle to manage your behaviour which will impact on your performance. Emotional Intelligence is “developable”. It enhances potential and helps manage interference.

6 What is Emotional Intelligence?
Process definition “EI is the habitual practice of thinking about feeling (and feeling about thinking) to manage behaviour.” Coaching definition “How I manage my personality.” For example, an Introvert may have a preference for working on their own, however, all Introverts are capable of working effectively with others. It’s not how smart you are but how you are smart!

7 What is Emotional Intelligence (EI)?
Write down up to 5 descriptive words about the climate in relation to the W2W sector at present Do the same about the general climate in your organisation now And the same again about how you feel in your job at the moment Refer to the feelings wheel

8 The feelings wheel

9 Emotion quadrants Explain that the words that you have chosen can be metaphorically placed in one of the 4 quadrants. Some descriptors that you will have used will demonstrate high energy and positive emotion (as opposed to high emotion!) On the other hand, some words will be low energy and negative emotion.

10 Emotion quadrants Have a look at the words on screen – these are simply examples of descriptive words that may be similar to those you have listed. Reflect on this for a moment – think about you feel working in your organisation, in this sector. The quadrants can be labelled – (click to reveal each quadrant name): Burnout Survival Renew Performing The key is to identify and understand where you are and why you are there. This will inform how you can manage yourself and “keep in the green”. Red and Green is a key principle of emotional intelligence.

11 Red and Green These are example of read an green in reality – at a personal and team or organisation level (climate). What is more recognisable to you? What is the impact of your organisational climate on you? Who drives the climate or an organisation? Do you recognise any behaviours in yourself or others in your teams / organisations? What is the impact of that behaviour on customers? How do I know if I’m Emotionally intelligent? We all go from Green to Red and back regularly. Red Breeds Red; Green encourages Green. EI is about being more mindful and the on-going practice of managing this. When we don’t then we become stuck, under productive and relationships suffer.

12 JCA Model of Developing EI
Intrapersonal intelligence Interpersonal intelligence Self Management Relationship Management Self Awareness Other Awareness Self Regard Regard for Others Explain the JCA EI framework. This helps us measure EI at a personal level. Intra – self, Inter – others Regard in the foundation that supports awareness. Awareness impacts on management. Our tools measure all 6 elements of EI and indicates RAG. EI is developable. These elements are broken down further into scales. (which are also measured). If organisations, teams and individuals in the sector are red, or lacking in EI, what impact does this have on customers? What would a green climate, with green behaviour (an emotionally intelligent climate) have on customers? But does it really make a difference?

13 A Study of EI

14 EI: Sustainable impact
Rich to talk about Mie and Momentum and impact on EA. Why they engaged with EI, initial reactions, reflective reactions – progression and sustained results. The data in the graph looks at the EI scales that are most relevant to customers in the W2W sector. Based on feedback from 150 Mangers who attended Mie Workshops

15 EI – Sustainable Impact
“I have found it particularly useful to identify and recognise the triggers which use up much negative energy. I now feel more able to remove myself from the 'survival zone' far more quickly and not dwell on negative thoughts.” “Mainly because it has given me confidence in me! It will make me think more about the value of some of my approaches (e.g. just spending time with people I work with, taking time to get to know how they tick, the importance of management visibility and approachability)” “This is life changing. Last week I wanted to resign. Today I feel energised and proud to work here and that I have the tools I need to succeed.” “It made me look at why I was being negative to certain colleagues and recognise that I always have a choice. I have started to challenge myself to rather than sit back and criticise”

16 EI: Embedding EI in culture
Other clients that engaged with JCA who are using EI to develop their organisation. Corporate, Private, Public and Voluntary sectors.

17 EI: a link to career sustainability
”The combination of factors and processes which enable people to progress towards or get into employment, to stay in employment, and to move on in the workplace.” The Canadian Blueprint model (Jarvis, 2000) Competencies The Psycho-social model of employability (Fugate et al., 2003) Psychological and Social aspects Life’s Work - Implicit Career Search (Miller, 2001) Core attitudes Where is the link with employability? People are people regardless of circumstance. We all have personalities that we manage well, or don’t manage so well, so why can t EI impact at W2W customer level? There are JCA tools already in the W2W market that can help develop emotional intelligence. MAPS PSI – understanding your personality is a tool used extensively that acts as a starting point for developing EI (looking at regard for self, self awareness and self management). We have built initial assessment tools based on EI principles that have had strong evaluations We are also engaged in developing a more specifically EI-based group programme and will be looking to evaluate and report back at this conference next year When used in groups, it starts to look at regard for others, awareness of others and relationship management. EI tools already exist in the market that have been proven to have a positive impact on customers.

18 JCAs employability model of sustainable change:
Engage - Getting people on board, interested, doing something worthwhile that’s of benefit Focus – where are you, how are you, where do and how do you want to be – whats stopping you and helping you? Transform – taking ownership and responsibility, wanting to change and doing something about it Sustain – changing mindsets and behaviours that stick – sustaining performance.
