3 Twenty years ago, Female models weighed 8% less than the average woman, Today… 23% less Marilyn Monroe was 5’5, 145lbs, & wore a size 16. Today’s models average 5’10, 110lbs, and wear a size O.

4 1 in 4 college girls have an eating disorder 1 in 2 women are trying to lose weight 53% of 13 year olds are unhappy with their body 78% of 17 year olds are too!

7 Body Image As a teen, your body is going through big changes. As your body changes, so do your thoughts and feelings about how you look. The way you see and feel about your body is called your body image.

8 What Can Effect Body Image? 3 Examples:  Family Viewpoints – Comments, Expectations  Media – Movies, Magazines, Musicians  Peers – What’s Popular / In Style

9 Positive vs. Negative Positive Body Image -Physical Appearance is only part of who you are -Realistic view of body Negative Body Image Unrealistic view of body Think others find you unattractive See your shape/size as a sign of failure

10 Appropriate Weight Approximate weight is within a range because it is determined by growth gender, age, height, and frame. The secret to reaching and maintaining an appropriate weight is to balance the calories taken in with the calories used in Physical Activity. By making sure the calories taken in are nutritious, avoiding FAD diets, and getting reasonable exercise a person can have a healthy body and a positive body image.

11 Overweight Weighing MORE than what is appropriate for your gender, height, age, body frame, and growth pattern. Over the past 40 years, the number of overweight teens has risen by 300 percent. The increase among children 6 to 11 years old is 400 percent. Obese: Weighing more than 20 percent of appropriate body weight Discussion Question: Why do you think the number of overweight teens has been on the rise?

12 Underweight Underweight: Weighing LESS than what is appropriate for your gender, height, age, body frame, and growth pattern. Teens who are too thin lack body fat, which is an important source of energy. This means their bodies are not getting enough of the nutrients they need to grow and function normally.

15 Eating Disorders Binge Eating Anorexia nervosa Bulimia Nervosa  An extreme and damaging eating behavior that can lead to sickness and even death.  Mental/Emotional Disorder Depression, Low-Self Esteem, Control Issues

16 Binge Eating Binge Eating: Also known as Compulsive Eating Most common eating disorder Eating large amounts of food in 1 sitting (Tub of ice cream, box of cookies) Eats alone, sneaky Can lead to Obesity.

17 Anorexia Self-Starvation Extreme Weight Loss Lead to Cardiac Arrest due to imbalance of electrolytes

18 Bulimia  A condition in which a person eats large amounts of food and then secretly purges.  Little weight loss  May gain weight
