A Presentation by Jeff Starr & Patrick Winters APRIL 5, 2012

TYPE I Writing Assignment Take 3 minutes and generate a list of what comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “RtII in the Middle School”. Whole Group Discussion Let’s generate a list on the board.

“How will the intervention periods be structured?” “Who will be doing the interventions?” “Who will serve on the RtII Team?” “What will each RtII Team member’s role be?” “What should the interdisciplinary teams be doing to support the RtII process?” “How will we communicate interventions to families to get buy-in?” “How will the RtII Team engage teachers to insure that their feedback is being heard and that intervention data and decisions are made swiftly and in a timely fashion?”

YOU SHOULD KNOW… 1.Tier II and Tier III - Targeted interventions that are at least 6 weeks in length (behavioral) and 10 weeks in length (academic). 2.Progressed monitored using AIMSWeb. 3.Occurring primarily in supported and co-taught LA and math classes during the intervention period. 4.Additional training provided over the summer for LA, special education, and math teachers on AIMSWeb and implementing targeted interventions. 5.Exploring intervention software, especially in the area of language arts.

LA and math classroom teachers will provide the intervention. Para educators will assist with progress monitoring. Special education teachers will be the primary interventionists.

QUESTION…What can interdisciplinary teams do to support the MS RtII process? ANSWER… Document Tier I and Tier II academic and behavioral interventions that are being used. Insure that interventions and progress monitoring are being conducted with fidelity. Rely on data to drive the RtII process. No more teacher referral/IST model. Work with appropriate grade level school counselor/administrator to address the needs of Tier I students.

It is vitally important that we communicate with families when their child needs a Tier II and/or Tier III intervention, be it academic or behavior. Therefore we will… * Send letters home and follow-up with phone calls. * Implement a positive reward system to encourage buy-in. * Schedule on site meetings for students designated as Tier III, behavior or academic. * Consider home visits depending on the situation.

Note…The RtII Team desires to engage teachers to insure that their feedback is being heard and that intervention data and decisions are made swiftly and in a timely fashion. Therefore, our goal is to… 1. Develop a spreadsheet of active RtII students along with their tier and interventions that is monitored and kept current. 2. Get monthly RtII feedback from teams disseminated to administration and back to RtII Team via grade-level counselors. 3. Have RtII as an agenda item for team meetings.

Go on to the wiki space page for Session D: RtII in the Middle School - Logistics, Roles, and Structure. Once there, do a post on the page where you do the following: 1.List THREE questions you still have as a result of the session. 2.List two things you learned from this session that you did not already know. 3.List one aspect of RtII you are excited about for the 2012- 2013 school year.
