4  What is type 1 diabetes?  What is type 2 diabetes?  What causes diabetes? Type 1 vs type 2  What are the symptoms? ◦ Low blood sugar ◦ High blood sugar  How is your food intake related to diabetes?  How is type one diabetes managed/treated?  How is type two diabetes managed/treated?  What is the prevalence of Diabetes in the US? 5  Body cannot produce insulin or enough insulin  Insulin is needed to convert sugar into energy

6  Body does produce insulin but your body doesn’t use it properly  Called “insulin resistance.”  Body stops producing insulin or doesn’t produce enough

7  Type 1 – Genetic, you’re born with it.  Type 2 – Acquired ◦ Obesity ◦ Malnutrition ◦ Lack of exercise  Type 2 used to be called adult onset diabetes but now it’s called type 2 because it’s happening to younger and younger people.

8  High ◦ Frequent urination ◦ Drowsiness ◦ Nausea ◦ Extreme hunger ◦ Extreme thirst ◦ Blurry vision

9 ◦ Low  Shaking  Fast heart beat  Sweating  Anxiety  Dizziness  Extreme hunger  Weakness  Tiredness  Irritability

10  Type 2 ◦ Too much sugar and fat in food can lead to weight gain and cause type 2 diabetes ◦ Too much weight carried in belly increases chance of type 2 ◦ Your pancreas gets worn out when it has to make insulin constantly to combat a diet high in sugar and carbohydrates

11  Insulin injections  Checking blood sugar  Insulin pump instead of or with injections  Eat a balanced diet that spreads out carbohydrates and sugar throughout the day  Exercise  Go to the dr to get screened  Don’t smoke  Don’t drink

12  Intense change in diet  Increase exercise  Insulin therapy  Blood sugar monitoring  Regular dr visits  Avoid alcohol and smoking
