Informationsteknologi Institutionen för informationsteknologi | www.it.uu.se The IT departments hosts: Particularly strong and large groups in  Specification, verification, and analysis of real-time and distributed systems.  Signal processing and system identification.  Construction, analysis and implementation of numerical methods for partial differential equations. 2 Highly Cited Researchers Members of the Royal Academy of Science, and of the Royal Academy of Engineering Science Four of the six most highly cited Swedish researchers in the Computer Science area** *) as defined by ISI HighlyCited.com **) according to a recent investigation using Citeseer

Informationsteknologi Institutionen för informationsteknologi | www.it.uu.se The IT departments hosts: Research Centres  UPMARC (Uppsala Programming for Multicore Architectures) 2008-2018, a Linnaeus center funded by the Swedish Research Council. Total budget: 100 million SEK.  WISENET (Uppsala Center for Wireless Sensor Networks) 2007-2016. A center of Excellence funded by Vinnova. Total budget: 210 million SEK. NITA (National IT User Center). NITA works for increased awareness regarding IT use in society. SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing), is under the Swedish Science Council a metacentre whose task is to coordinate and develop high end computing capacity for Swedish research. UPPMAX (Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science), which is Uppsala University's center for high performance computing. Uppsala STS (Science and Technology Studies Center), which is a multi-disciplinary centre for research on the relation between science, technology and society.

Informationsteknologi Institutionen för informationsteknologi | www.it.uu.se Citations from KoF panel reports* The friendly atmosphere and the cohesiveness that prevails at the Information Technology Department have been mentioned by several members. The panel believes that such friendly atmosphere is indeed a valuable and rather unique asset that undoubtedly contributes to the quality of the work performed at the department. COMPUTER SYSTEMS: The work done on Verification, mostly based on Model Checking, is of world-class quality. The work on Stat Cache is world leading and has led to a startup company that is producing a highly useful program analysis tool. The group in Computer Networks is rightly proud of its ability to empirically challenge many of the assumptions made in modelling of mobile networks and to develop tools that are internationally used. COMPUTING SCIENCE: The four research groups in Computing Science are all internationally recognized, and in some cases world class. Recently, there has been significant world-class work in developing highly effective memory- management techniques making a contribution in this highly competitive area. The database activity within the IS Department is internationally recognized for work in several modern directions * An overall evaluation of research at Uppsala University, called "Quality and Renewal 2007” (in Swedish: Kvalitet och Förnyelse), was carried out during the spring of 2007.

Informationsteknologi Institutionen för informationsteknologi | www.it.uu.se Citations from KoF panel reports HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION: Among the three units (at UU) where HCI research gets done, the HCI division at the IT department is clearly the most active, both in absolute numbers and in relation to the size of the personnel. The networking activities of the HCI researchers are outstanding. SYSTEMS AND CONTROL The Division of Systems and Control, in the Department of Information technology, even though small compared to similar divisions in other Swedish universities, performs world leading research in system identification and in signal processing. The research activities cover both theoretical research of the highest international quality and a range of applications in which the theoretical results produced by the members of the division are able to achieve significant improvements over existing technologies. SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING The Division has a clear strategy; the research is directed towards challenging and important applications often motivated by scientists outside the department and from industry. The Division is very active and willing to explore new ways to establish research cooperation with other groups. The Division is well positioned in the emerging field of computational science. The overall impression of the research is that it is of internationally high standard with elements of top-level activities.

Informationsteknologi Institutionen för informationsteknologi | www.it.uu.se The IT department in Sweden Uppsala Univ Royal Inst of Technology Lund Univ Chalmers Inst Of Technology The strenght of Computer Science/Mathematics at Swedish Universities, according to a recent Governmental enquiry (SOU 2007:81, Nov 2007) The numbers are equivalent number of full time researchers performing on world average level. In Uppsala this is accomplished by about half that number of researchers. The analysis is based on bibliometry.
