2 OA History G The Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s national honor society. G OA has been around since 1915 and exists to serve the local council. Members of the OA are referred to as “Arrowmen,” and their main duty is to serve their unit. G They wear red and white sashes and a patch on the right pocket flap of the Scout uniform to identify their lodge affiliation G The Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s national honor society. 3 Benefits to Scouts G OA is a way for peers to recognize Scouts who exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. G Scouts have a chance to sharpen their leadership skills by leading others at a local, council or national level, by planning and promoting events, by communicating, and by attending leadership programs. G Scout may actively participate with his troop or team for a longer period of time if he is active in the OA. G Order of the Arrow operates three great high-adventure programs—Philmont Scout Ranch, Northern Tier, and the Florida Sea Base. 6 Benefit to Council G When the troop is receiving assistance from the Order of the Arrow, the council is also benefiting. G The mission of the Order is to become an integral part of the council. 7 THE ORDER OF THE ARROW IS A THING OF THE SPIRIT… THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT ARE WHAT COUNT: BROTHERHOOD - IN A DAY WHEN THERE IS TOO MUCH HATRED AT HOME AND ABROAD CHEERFULNESS - IN A DAY WHEN PESSIMISTS HAVE THE FLOOR AND CYNICS ARE POPULAR SERVICE - IN A DAY WHEN MILLIONS ARE INTERESTED IN GETTING OR GRASPING, RATHER THAN GIVING. 8 How Can the OA help You and Your Unit’s Program? G The Order of the Arrow is a service organization willing to help the unit, District and Council G If you already knew that the Order was a resource, hopefully you learned of new ways that you could utilize in order to take advantage of the Order of the Arrow. G Utilizing the OA will lead to a win-win situation between the individual, unit, district, and council programs. 9 The Kola Lodge in Action G Earned Quality Lodge for 2008 for the first time in 7 years G Presented 8 Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, including 6 gold-level awards, one bronze-level award, and one "Call to Service" lifetime achievement award. G Took the second largest contingent to the ArrowCorps5 Manti-La Sal project G Presented two James E. West Fellowship donations of $1,000 G Provided over 3,625 hours of service in 2008 to their Council camps, National Forests, and local communities G 9 Lodge members attended the OA National Leadership Seminar, the highest level of youth leadership training, and 2 of our youth members were Instructors for this course G 124 new members were inducted, 44 achieved Brotherhood level of membership, and 6 inducted into the Vigil Honor G 2 of Kola Lodge’s Youth were recognized with the Founder’s Award G Earned Quality Lodge for 2008 for the first time in 7 years G Presented 8 Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, including 6 gold-level awards, one bronze-level award, and one "Call to Service" lifetime achievement award. 10 Membership Requirements G Is a First Class Scout, under the age of 21 G Is an active, registered member of a Troop or Varsity team G Has completed a minimum of 15 nights camping, with one resident camp of 6 days and 5 nights within the last 2 year period.
