Sigmund Freud Stages By: Dylan T., Stella M., Kate H. 9/14/13

2 Freud's Theory Psychosexual theory that emphasizes how parents manage their child’s sexual and aggressive drives in the first few years of life, which is crucial for a healthy personality and development.

3 Understanding Human Behavior
-According to Freud, the relations establish id, an ego, and a superego during the pre-school years, determining the individual’s personality. Id Ego Superego Largest portion of the mind. Source of biological needs and desires. Conscious rational part of personality. It emerges in early infancy to re-direct Id’s impulses. Develops between 3-6 years of ages. Develops through parent interaction, who help children to conform to the values of society.

4 Sigmund Freud Australian Neurologist Father of psychoanalysis
University of Vienna Created clinical methods as well as development processes for treating psychopathology

6 Origin Freud developed his theories after realizing the existence of unknown mental conditions and symptoms that were found in most children during the 1890’s/late 19th century. Freud’s first theories were published in Studies of Hysteria along with the help of his mentor, Josef Breuer. This was the birth of psychoanalysis.

7 Freud’s Psychosexual Stages
Oral Birth- 1 Year The ego directs the baby’s sucking activities toward breast or bottle. If oral needs are not met, the individual may develop habits such as thumb sucking or fingernail biting in childhood or overeating and smoking in later life.

8 Freud’s Psychosexual Stages Cont.
Anal 1-3 years of age Toddlers and preschoolers enjoy holding and releasing urine and feces. Toilet training becomes a major issue between parent/child. If parents insist that children be trained before they are ready, or if they make too few demands, conflicts about anal control may appear in the form of extreme orderliness and cleanliness or messiness and disorder.

9 Theory Critique Freud's theory was 1st to stress the influence of early parent child relationship on development. Overemphasized the influence of sexual feeling in development Based on problems of sexually repressed, well-to-do adults in the 19th century Victorian society, doesn’t apply in other cultures Hadn't studied children directly

10 Today We continue to use Freud’s theories in current society and therapy to undercover the meaning behind continuous behaviors and habits seen in childhood years. Psychoanalysis is still commonly used today as well to understand deeper meanings to patients’ feelings and thoughts.
