2 People Management Management is being able to get the best out of people and the best in people for the benefit of other people (and for themselves, of course).

3 People Management The following groups of people will influence your project: - Your colleagues (members of the project team) - Volunteers – leaders - The young people, members Guides and Scouts

4 How to manage project team members? - Respect their concerns and try to overcome them - Use their experience - Give them responsibilities if they want to accept them - Accept that colleagues may not be as enthusiastic as yourself

5 How to manage Leaders? - Give them responsibility and consult with them - Involve them early in the process - Be clear about your expectations and receptive to their concerns - Value their work and thank them. Always!

6 How to manage young people / members? - They are seen and taken as partners - Their opinions are effectively taken into account - They are seen as an asset and not as a problem - Young people may know more about young people than adults

7 When involving people, they should: 1. Be willing / be interested to participate 2. Be available / have a time to participate 3. Be skillful / have a knowledge

9 Motivation of leaders Motivated Leaders: - Are creative in reaching their goals. - Perform to a higher standard. - Carry projects successfully through to completion. - Spread their motivation to others Happy leaders = happy members = more members

10 What motivates people to be in Guding and Scouting? - Social networks – the sense of belonging to a group. - Achievement – completing concrete tasks and reaching goals. - Experience – discovering new ways of doing things, and learning new skills. - Knowledge – finding out information and sharing what you know by teaching others. - Influence – when your behaviour has a positive effect on others.

11 What motivates people to be in Guding and Scouting? - Commitment – to the values of Scouting and Guiding, to our vision of a better world. - Contribution – being part of and perpetuating the life of the Movement. - Enjoyment – simply having fun, opportunity to travel. - Personal interest – as a parent, productive use of free time. - Personal development – for life-long learning, developing ‘soft’ skills.

12 Sharing ownership In order to share the ownership of the project, all those involved in implementation should: - Get familiar with goals, objectives and actions - Understand the goals, objectives and actions - Accept goals, objectives and actions IT IS ALL ABOUT COMMUNICATION

14 Several levels of participation Informing Goal - To provide the members/public with balanced and objective information to assist them in understanding the problem, alternatives, opportunities and/or solutions Message to the members - We will keep you informed

15 Several levels of participation Consulting Goal - To obtain public feedback on analysis, alternatives and/or decisions Message to the members - We will keep you informed, listen to and acknowledge concerns and aspirations, and provide feedback on how public input influenced the decision

16 Several levels of participation Involving Goal - To work directly with the public throughout the process to ensure that public concerns and aspirations are consistently understood and considered. Message to the members - We will work with you to ensure that your concerns and aspirations are directly reflected in the alternatives developed and provide feedback on how public input influenced the decision.

17 Several levels of participation Collaborating Goal - To partner with the public in each aspect of the decision including the development of alternatives and the identification of the preferred solution Message to the members - We will look to you for direct advice and innovation in formulating solutions and incorporate your advice and recommendations into decisions to the maximum extent possible..
