7 FAMILY LIFE Changes in family-life during the 1980s:  young people were remaining longer in education  women were taking higher studies  education and employment trends contributed to the postponement of marriage  the marriage rate was declining  the proportion of all new mothers who were in their late thirties increased  the fertility rate continued its downward slide  the divorce rate peaked  mothers moving into paid work required changes in arrangements for the care of the children But:  the families remained the basic unit of society  families played a central role in shaping the health and wellbeing of all immediate family members
