The forest has been used since Norman times when it was used for deer hunting. Commoners grazed animals and obtained wood for firewood and building. It is now very popular with visitors who enjoy walking, riding and fishing. Epping Forest needs careful management to balance the conservation of ancient trees and wildlife with recreational use.
