16 In 1492 Columbus discovered America. The major powers in Europe at the time- England, France, Spain and Portugal quickly placed claim on lands in America. Their hope was to find gold, silver and other riches. England settled colonies on the east coast of America. England’s largest colony was Virginia named after Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Elizabeth died in 1603 and was succeeded by King James I. He realized that sending new settlers and maintaining a colony was very expensive. He did not like to spend money on the colonies.

17 In 1606, a group of businessmen formed a company called the Virginia Company of London. They went to King James with an offer. The company would finance a ship to carry settlers to the Virginia colony and help to support them with food and supplies. However, they needed the permission of King James to do so since he owned the land. King James thought this was a great idea! The Virginia Company would pay and help support his colony, not him! Then he would gain money in taxes when the colony became profitable! In 1606, King James granted to first charter to the Virginia Company.
