Rocks 14 Starter Rocks 9/2/15 Application: Paste notes here Connection/Exit: Your friends are having a debate about how rocks should be classified. One of them thinks it should be by their composition, while the other thinks should be by the way they form. You pick a side and explain why you agree with that friend. Practice: 13 RockColorTextureWhat it looks like Draw a picture of the layers of the Earth and label it. What are some limitations to this model? EQ: How are rocks classified?

ROCKS
5
What is Rock? Rock is a substance composed of one or more minerals. Granite
6
What is Rock? It can be made out of a naturally occurring substances that do not fit perfectly into minerals. Limestone
7
What is Rock? They are placed into three groups. BasaltJasperAmethyst
8
Rock Categories Igneous Rock- These rocks are classified according to their composition and texture. Formed from cooling of molten rock. Pumice ObsidianGranite
9
Rock Categories Igneous Rock- Pumice ObsidianGranite A.Composition-refers to the minerals of rocks that are formed. B. Texture-the shape, size, arrangement, and distribution of the minerals that make up rocks
10
Rock Categories cont… Sedimentary rock-Formed from cemented sediments, minerals, or rock fragments. Have 3 categories:
11
Rock Categories cont… Clastic rocks- are made of fragments of previously existing rocks. Examples: breccia and sandstone
12
Rock Categories cont… Organic rock- come from organisms- they are formed either directly or indirectly from the material. Examples: Chalk and limestone
13
Rock Categories cont… Chemical rock-formed when a sea or lake dries up, leaving large amounts of minerals that were dissolved in the water. Examples: Rock salt and gypsum
14
Rock Categories cont… Metamorphic Rock-Formed from already existing rocks are buried deep with in the Earth, that is effected by tremendous heat, great pressure, and chemical reactions.
