A good way to determine your fit within a Service Area is to ask yourself what your first reaction is when presented with a business problem. Each service area focuses on unique client needs. Do you first think of… The process, financial or operational approaches to solve that problem?  Then, you are probably a fit within Strategy & Operations. The organizational, people-related or leadership activities needed to solve the problem? Then, you are probably a fit within Human Capital. The enabling technology needed in order to be solve the problem?  Then, you are probably a fit within Technology.

17 What is the consulting lifestyle?

18 Not just a job, but a way of life…
Consulting is far from your normal 9 to 5 – the firm, the work, and rewards are unique and diverse! Working conditions Project demands usually requires at least 45 hours per week, sometimes more. Instead of working at one desk day after day, traveling consultants are able to work wherever is most effective and convenient. Most of the time, this is at the client site. Being on different projects and traveling to different client sites decreases the likelihood of getting bored and promotes a learning environment. Getting involved Approximately 80% of your consulting job focuses on client work, but up to 20% of your time is spent giving back to your firm and community. Activities include: Recruiting, community service, and social events. Other Client Work Speaker Notes: As mentioned previously, working conditions often require longer hours than a standard 9-5, especially in order to meet a deadline. And because most consultants travel frequently, working conditions may include working in conference rooms, airplanes, hotel rooms, and hallways. However, this constant change of scenery increases the likelihood that you will not be stuck working at the same desk every week and gives you the chance to see the country (and the world!) Extracurricular activities are also a large part of many Consulting firms. At Deloitte, we encourage our employees to give back to the community through firm-sponsored and employee initiated events. Other activities also include participating in recruiting, networking, and social events. One of the benefits of the frequent-traveler lifestyle is the personal accrual of travel points (airline miles, status at hotel chains, free rental cars, etc.). [Please share your own travel stories or describe how you have benefited from affinity program membership.] Life on the road Consultants typically travel every week, usually Monday through Thursday (sometimes Friday). Depending on your level, you may change projects every few months, or even weeks. Projects can range in location from locally to internationally. Frequent travelers earn lots of hotel points and frequent flyer miles, which are yours to keep and to use for personal vacations.
