3 Phases of Surgery Pre-operative –Prior to initiation of surgical procedure –Begins with the skin incision or endoscope insertion Intra-operative –Time frame between skin incision or endoscope insertion and ends when the surgical dressing has been applied or the endoscope has been removed Post-operative –From application of surgical dressing or removal of the endoscope until the patient has been discharged from PACU

4 Pre-operative Phase of Surgery Donning OR attire and PPE Preparing OR Gathering supplies, instrumentation, equipment Opening of sterile field supplies and items Surgical hand scrub Toweling, gowning and gloving Preparation of sterile field Initial pre-operative count VS monitoring Transfer of patient to OR bed Positioning patient Assisting other sterile team members Prepping the patient Draping the patient Pulling up to the field and passing off cords, tubing, light handles

5 Principles of Asepsis “A sterile field is created for each surgical procedure” “Sterile team members must be attired appropriately before entering the sterile field” “Movement in and around the sterile field must not compromise that sterile field” (Price. ST for the ST, 2 nd ed., p. 319.)

6 Principles of Asepsis The principles of asepsis have concepts or rules for each of the three of them that must be observed at all times These rules are the key to the practice of sterile technique The application of these principles and each of their rules is referred to as Principles of Asepsis Adhering to the principles is governed by the surgical technologist’s surgical conscience which entails a moral integrity to provide safe care to the patient at all times “Aeger Primo” Patient First
