Should the drinking age be lowered?

What percentage of SIUE students do you think consume alcohol? Did you know that only 41% of students consume alcohol once or more per week on campus.

Alcohol Myth/Fact Game

Drinking Coffee will make you sober Drinking coffee will not sober up a person. It could cause more harm than good since coffee, like alcohol, is a diuretic that can further dehydrate a person's body.

Forcing a person to vomit will help them sober up Forcing a person to vomit does not help a person sober up and could be dangerous. Once alcohol has passed into the small intestine, vomiting will not expel the alcohol. Encouraging a semiconscious person to vomit could cause choking and/or aspiration.

Parents are allowed to serve alcohol to their underage children While parents in 30 states may choose to provide alcohol to their own underage children, it is never legal for parents or guardians to provide alcohol people under 21 other than their children.

Beer before liquor, never sicker. Liquor before beer, never fear. Bottom line is it isn't which order you consume your drinks in that matters, it's the total amount of alcohol that you consume.

Women absorb alcohol into the bloodstream faster and metabolize it slower than men.

12 fl oz of regular beer- about 5% alcohol 5 fl oz of table wine- about 12% alcohol 1.5 oz shot (80 proof, hard liquor) – about 40& alcohol A standard drink contains about 0.6 fl oz of pure alcohol For different types of malt liquor, wine, or beer the alcohol content can vary from drink to drink

What is binge drinking? A brief period of excessive alcohol consumption, usually happens in one sitting

Effects of binge drinking Alcohol and anxiety Alcohol consumed in high amounts, in a short period of time, can diminish your ability to manage and alleviate feelings of anxiety.

Effects Blackouts Enough alcohol will prevent the brain from recording new memories. The amnesia may be partial, or fragmentary, so that, upon awakening, one may remember some of what transpired while intoxicated. Or, it may be a total amnesia starting after the drinking began until the time of awakening.

Effects Alcohol and Sleep Alcohol leads to a more rapid induction of sleep, shallow sleep, and multiple awakenings can occur. Although alcohol may be effective in sleep induction, it impairs sleep during the second half of the night and can lead to a reduction in overall sleep time.

Consequences of binge drinking Assault (including sexual assault) Increases chances of violence Unsafe sex Health problems Drunk driving Alcohol Abuse and dependence Academic Problems Injury Death

Pace Yourself Sip slowly Have no more than one drink per hour Have “drink spacers”, where every other drink is a non-alcoholic one like soda or water Include food- eating while consuming alcohol makes the alcohol take a longer time to absorb into your system Have conversations- if you’re busy chatting, you’re not drinking Keep track of how much you drink- it may help you slow down drinking

Alcohol Poisoning What Happens to Your Body When You Get Alcohol Poisoning? Alcohol depresses nerves that control involuntary actions such as breathing and the gag reflex (which prevents choking). A fatal dose of alcohol will eventually stop these functions.

Alcohol Poisoning Critical Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning Mental confusion, stupor, coma, or person cannot be roused. Vomiting. Seizures. Slow breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute). Irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths). Hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness.

Alcohol Poisoning What Should I Do If I Suspect Someone Has Alcohol Poisoning? Know the danger signals. Do not wait for all symptoms to be present. Be aware that a person who has passed out may die. If there is any suspicion of an alcohol overdose, call 911 for help. Don't try to guess the level of drunkenness.

Alcohol Poisoning What Can Happen to Someone With Alcohol Poisoning That Goes Untreated? Victim chokes on his or her own vomit. Breathing slows, becomes irregular, or stops. Heart beats irregularly or stops. Hypothermia (low body temperature). Hypoglycemia (too little blood sugar) leads to seizures. Untreated severe dehydration from vomiting can cause seizures, permanent brain damage, or death.

IT IS OKAY TO CALL FOR HELP Call 911 if you suspect your friend or a person you know may have alcohol poisoning Don’t wait!!!!! It is important that you get help immediately in these situations You won’t get in trouble for doing the right thing!!!!!!
