And….We’re Back! o Today’s Game Plan: o Review!!! Grab a laptop and complete the Post-Break Survey o Identify, summarize, and discuss key points regarding world hunger o Looking ahead…

Post-Break Refresher Survey Visit the following link and take a quick post-break think fest survey!!!!! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PQ9QPRK

Key Points: World Hunger What is globalization? Qualities of developed vs. developing nations What factors cause hunger? How has globalization impacted the world hunger problem?

What is globalization? 1) a worldwide movement toward financial & communication integration 2) to extend to other or all parts of the globe; what once affected one nation can now affect the world. Examples: Communication integration: Thanks to advances in internet and digital technology, information and ideas are immediately available nearly everywhere. Extending to all parts of the globe: Rural Chinese families can buy luxury items such as beer, cigarettes, and Coca-cola. In previous years, these same families subsisted only on goods available locally. Discuss: Can you think of other examples of globalization in today’s world?

Developing vs. developed nations Developing nation: a country with a low level of material being with low or middle incomes. emerging (or still weak due to political conflict, etc.) economy, government, and infrastructure has not or is just beginning to participate in global trade. Examples: Haiti, Sub-Saharan African countries

Developed Nation (or, industrialized). Developed Nation: an industrialized nation possesses a highly organized and developed government and infrastructure has access to advanced technology, resources, services, goods, and communication. Examples: United States, Western Europe

What factors cause hunger? World wide problems: natural catastrophes & environmental degradation food supply and demand imbalances inadequate food reservations warfare and civil disturbances migration (refugees) declining ecological conditions in agricultural regions

What factors cause hunger? Problems of Developing World: Underdevelopment Excessive population growth Lack of economic incentives- farmers using inappropriate methods and laboring on land that they may lose or can never hope to own Parents lacking knowledge of basic nutrition for their children Insufficient government attention to rural sector.

What factors cause hunger? Problems of the Developed/Industrialized World: Excessive use of natural resources. Pollution. Inefficient, animal protein diets. Inadequate research in science and technology. Excessive government bureaucracy. Loss of farmland to competing uses. Discussion Question: Do you think these factors could also contribute to the obesity epidemic? Why or why not?

What factors cause hunger? Problems linking industrial and developing worlds: Unequal access to resources Inadequate transfer of research and technology. Lack of development planning. Insufficient food aid. Politics of food aid and nutrition education. Inappropriate technological research. Inappropriate role of multinational corporations. Insufficient emphasis on agricultural development for self- sufficiency. Discussion question: Why do you think these problems occur? What motivates the disconnect between industrial (developed) and developing nations?

How has globalization impacted the world hunger problem? Well, among other things…. Advances in technology & data collection (ex. “poverty mapping”) reduce poverty by enabling decision makers & the public to better visualize & understand the problem. Advances in food production & distribution help aid organization to deliver mass amounts of food to malnourished populations. Growth-seeking corporations like Coca-cola and McDonalds continue to pursue developing economies to set up new business ventures… Discuss: Has globalization helped to alleviate hunger? Or, has globalization worsened the problem?

What’s Ahead!?!?!!! Tomorrow: Guidelines & rubric for photo portfolio project. This week: Wrap up World Hunger Problem. Transition into obesity epidemic and global food economy. Friday: Photo assignment #1 due.
