Advanced Physical Education Coach Buchanan

Class Description This class is designed to allow students an opportunity to gain a well-rounded physical education for life-long activities. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities such as: basketball, softball, track, tennis, volleyball, soccer, flag football, weight training, physical conditioning, etc. Emphasis is placed on the refinement and improvement of skills in each activity.

WARNING! YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO RUN A LOT IN THIS CLASS!! IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO PUSH YOURSELF TO GET RESULTS, SEE ME AFTER THIS PRESENTATION TO GET A PASS TO GET YOUR SCHEDULE CHANGED!

Class Policies: You are expected to be in the gym BEFORE the tardy bell stops ringing. You expected to dress out every day….NO EXCUSES! Wear athletic shoes, shirt, and shorts/pants in accordance with the school dress code policy. Dress quickly and sit in your assigned spot on the gym floor for attendance. Arriving to your assigned spot after we have started warm ups will result in deduction of participation points. A doctor’s note will be required if you are not able to participate. If you are absent you will lose 5 points for that day. You will be able to complete an absence assignment to regain those points. It is your responsibility to go to the school website to access my teacher page to get the assignment and it must be turned in within 5 days of your absence. Follow directions at all times. Perform exercises correctly. Make sure you are spotting correctly when in the weight room. This means pay attention to your lifting partner and give help when they need it. Your work ethic will play a big part of your grade. Always give 100% effort.

Weight Room Rules Keep it clean: No food or drinks; clean up after yourselves; replace plates and dumb bells to their proper place, etc. Always use a spotter when lifting a heavy weight. Motivate and encourage your lifting partner. Remain quiet in the hallways to and from the weight room or extra conditioning work will be on the agenda for the next class meeting. ABSOLUTELY NO HORSEPLAY!! Be serious about what you are doing.

Weightlifting Guidelines A weight room can be a dangerous place if you are not careful and do not follow proper procedures. Make sure you have a good grip on the bar. Perform each repetition in a SLOW and CONTROLLED manner. Each rep (up and down) should take at least 4 seconds. Have a stable position from which to lift. Keep feet on the floor when performing the bench press. Use your legs, not your back, to lift weights from the floor. Use at least one spotter, two if necessary, when lifting heavy weights.

Supplies Needed: Athletic Attire: includes t-shirt (no buttons or zippers please), athletic shorts/sweatpants/wind pants (no buttons or zippers please), athletic shoes with good grip, athletic socks, sweatshirt or jacket for cool days outside. All clothing must comply with the school dress code (no spaghetti strap shirts or short shorts!) Optional but recommended: weight training gloves, yoga mat, water bottle. NOTE: A locker in the locker room will be provided for you to store your belongings in at no charge to you. It will be your responsibility to memorize your locker combination so that the locker can be locked and your belongings will be secure. Do not share your combination with anyone or you compromise the security of your belongings. Anything left in the locker room that is not secured and locked in your assigned locker may be stolen! Neither Northside High School nor Coach Buchanan is responsible for anything that is stolen or taken out of the locker room. It is your responsibility to secure your belongings in the locker assigned to you.

Grading Policies: Daily Grade: 70% (Dressing, participating, following directions, conduct, etc.) Timed Runs: 30% (You lose 5 pts a day from your six weeks grade for not dressing out!)

Final Exam: There will be a physical fitness/written exam on the scheduled exam day.
