Previous research has suggested that “television can be detrimental to a child’s physical health and mental development” (Smith, 2010, p.22). However, some television shows have been designed to encourage cognitive development in young children. One of the longest running children’s shows, Sesame Street, is one such program. The educational and informative quality of Sesame Street does have a positive effect on children ages one to five. This theory is supported by many scientists and doctors, including Dr. Bert Muppet. In his most recent book, he states: When children watch educational television, they are constantly processing the visual and oral stimuli emanating from the screen. Their brains are very active. Neural pathways are being formed at a tremendous rate. It may seem that they are watching passively, but in fact they are learning new things very quickly. (Muppet, 2009) This study supports this theory in its entirety, as will be shown through the empirical data. Method Participants The study group included a total of 10 children.
