1. ABI/Inform Global Search 1000 premier worldwide business periodicals for full-text information on advertising, marketing, economics, human resources, finance, taxation, computers, and more. Also, information on 60,000+ companies. Feinberg Library subscribes to the database from a vendor called ProQuest. If you are completing your assignment from off-campus you will need to authenticate (verify your PSU identity) using your PSU email username and password constructed from the last four digits of your SSN# followed by the first four letters of your last name in CAPITAL LETTERS.

2. This is the initial search screen. It automatically defaults to a citation and abstract field search. Click this button to change type of search ABI/Inform Global Search

3. Fields Available to Search These are all the kind of searches you can do. In other words, these are the fields that you can search or the queries you can make in the database.

4. Limit to Scholarly Journals Check this box to include only scholarly journals in your search results

6. Enter Topic as a Citation and abstract Search (The computer looks for the words you type in the citation and abstract.) Do a search for the topic glass ceiling

7. Search Results These are your search results. The database found 160 scholarly articles with the words glass ceiling in the citation or abstract.

8. Full-text display formats : Text + Graphics is an HTML version of the article. Page Image -PDF means the article has been scanned. These are larger files and take longer to download or print.

9. Limit by time period: Date Range Remember you usually want the most current information. I usually limit my results to the past five years. Pull down menu to specify date range

10. Date Range Input While the computer asks you for a specific format, I find it easiest just to type in the years. The default will fill in the rest

11. Parts of the Record: Searchable Fields Searchable Fields All words in the abstract can be searched All words in the citation can be searched

12. Parts of the Record: Subjects These are the subjects that this article is about. This article has four subjects: 1) Civil Rights Act 1991-US, 2) Government employees, 3) Sex discrimination, 4) Auditors

13. The citation is what you will need to put the article in a bibliography or list of references. This is very important to avoid plagiarism charges. Parts of a Citation Title of article Authors Name of journal or magazine Volume followed by number Pages

14. New Search: Figuring out the Correct Subject(s) to use It can be difficult to find the correct subject heading. Try a citation and abstract search for your topic: international business management. This search retrieved too many records to look at all of them

15. Examine the Subjects Find one journal article that DOES seem relevant to your topic. Take a close look at its subjects.

16. Redo your search with the relevant subjects ABI/Inform makes it easy for you to redo your search. Click on the More Like This yellow bar to see the subjects broken out.

17. Check the subjects you think are most relevant for international business management. I’ve selected 1) multinational corporations and 2) management styles. Select your subjects from the list

18. New search results are on Topic Target 236 records is a much more workable number and they all really are about international business management.

19. Scholarly Journals Selection The only thing I don’t like about redoing the search this way is that it doesn’t keep your scholarly journals selection. Click the Scholarly Journals tab to further limit your results.
