Using WilsonSelect

WilsonSelect (or WilsonSelectPlus) is a database of full-text articles from magazines and journals. It covers a very wide range of subjects.

Begin your research on the Library home page. Use the Quick Link.

Select “Research Databases”. Wilson Select is located in this set of links.

WilsonSelect is one of the FirstSearch set of databases.

You will see this screen if you are not using a JCC computer. Consult your “Passwords ” bookmark for the Autho # and Password.

A Basic Search screen is displayed. Drop the arrow to choose a database.

Scroll to the bottom of the list. Click on WilsonSelect Click on Search

Enter your search term/s Check to be sure WilsonSelect is displayed.

You can use single words or phrases. Click on Search.

Examine your set of results. Review your options. Scroll down to look at the list.

Let’s look at one example. Click on the title link to display the record.

Look over your options. You can email or print the record. You can print the article as a PDF… … or in HTML format.

You may find an abstract- a summary- of your article. This may help you decide if the article suits your need.

The “Descriptor” terms are links to more specific articles. Choose one of these to begin a new search.

If the article is useful, click on one of the full-text options.

The article displays. The information for a Works Cited page is shown at the top.

Skim or read through. Return to your search results if this article is not useful.

You can also print the full article. Or you can email the full- text.

When finished, return to your search.

Continue your examination of results, or start a new search.

An Advanced Search can provide more accurate results. Connect terms with “and” Identify your search terms.

Scroll through the results.

These results are much more focused than those from the Basic Search.

The terms you searched are highlighted in the abstract. Print this article from a PDF.

The article appears as it did in the original journal.

There are several ways to limit searches. Choose these options if they relate to your topic. This is important for academic research in the sciences.

The results may be few, but very accurate.

Limiting searches to a year or a type of document may help to focus a search that is too big.

Compare the first search with the limited search.

The Help button provides instruction for the screen you are currently using.

Consult Help for instructions and suggestions.

You can print out any Help topic.

Be sure to Exit when you have finished searching.
