1 Big Woes for the Little Magician MVB inherits all of AJ’s problems and enemies but not his popularity Issues with Canada, slavery, Texas but worst of all, an impending panic and depression

2 Depression Doldrums… Causes: land speculation in the west The banking system as it existed then crop failures Financial problems in Europe Results: bank failures and unemployment, farm prices drop Attempts to fix? – Divorce bill

3 Gone to Texas Mexico owns Texas by 1820’s 1823 Texas gives large land tract to Stephen Austin and he agreed to bring in 300 American families: They were supposed to be Catholic and become “Mexicanized” Problems: they remained American in outlook, continued to own slaves after 1830, argued over land

4 Lone Star Rebellion 1836 Texas declares independence under leader Sam Houston. Mexican leader Santa Anna defeats Texans at Alamo and Goliad Houston victorious at San Jacinto (now Houston) – SA surrenderes, lower boundary of Texas at Rio Grande Texas is a “country” now – wants to join US but US conflicted over slavery- so not yet

5 Log cabins and hard cider Election of 1840 Dem: MVB Whig: WM. H. Harrison WHH – not the best candidate but best potential vote-getter “log cabin and Hard Cider” – basically – WHH is a man of humble origins and a “regular guy” Reality – he was wealthy – rather elite

6 Politics for the people By 1840 – the trend in politics is…. Aristocracy is out – democracy for all is in Humble beginnings and a common touch are desired and necessary tog et elected. Even the “elite” and highly educated needed to act humble and common.

7 Two Party System By 1840 we have two definite political parties: Democrats and Whigs Democrats believe in: Liberty of the individual, states rights, federal restraint in Econ and social issues Whigs believe: value of community, govt should work for the people, national bank, tariffs, internal improvements, public schools

8 More whig info: Whigs were leanign towards an anti-slavery and anti-liquor position BOTH PARTIES had a wide cross section of members form across the country. Neither party is greatly geographical or sectional at this time
