1 Second Grade 2007 Open House Our day is full of activities, here are just a few.

2 We start our day by unpacking our back pack, turning in our lunch buck, and putting our snack in the snack basket. This is when our homework is also collected.

3 Homework Expectations  Homework should be completed neatly and on the correct paper. Be sure the paper is headed correctly and that your child has put his or her name.  Reading Card must be signed nightly during the week. If you want your child to read over the weekend, then sign the card and your child will be given a small treat.  If for some reason, homework is not done, the consequences will be “double homework.”  Weekly Decodable Book, must be signed and returned!

4 Then, we do morning work or we write in our journal. If we are writing in our journal, the teacher walks around and gives us suggestions to improve our stories. We use our red sheets, word wall, and our vivid words.

5 Our first subject is Reading.

6 We do dictation, word blending, and we read in small groups. We always take time to review what we have read through discussions.

7 We love our Workshop Time. We follow the wheel on the board and do the activities. Please look at our activities….

8 During this time, we also do Remedial Work and Enrichment. This is the part of the day where we work at our own pace.

9  Flashcard Drills and Speed Drills help students memorize basic math facts. Memorization of these facts is critical for future success in Math.  We will be doing “Fact Sheets”, the goal is 30 problems in a minute. We will correct them orally.

10  Manipulatives are an important aspect of Math.  Students experience math concepts utilizing many “hands on” approaches.  We enjoy our Math Meeting  We love to “skip count.”

12 We always do Language Arts. We do Grammar activities, Creative writing, and Daily Language.

13 Science and Social Studies  Both of these subjects are integrated throughout the curriculum. Trade books, special theme units, and the Internet all enhance this learning time.

14 We end our day with Religion, we love to read Bible stories and sing songs. Our favorite part is the discussions we have, we know to be respectful. We will be preparing to receive First Holy Communion and Reconciliation this year.

15 We go to Mass once a week. It is so important to participate in Mass and to listen.

16  Each day we end our day with “Twenty Questions.” Sometimes we share our reading buddy journals or we read silently.

17 AR Testing We take tests throughout the day and work toward our individual goal.

18 Communication  You can E-mail me, leave a message on the phone, or write a note and send it to school with your child.  Check the website, following the links from the school site.  Request a conference.  Encourage your child to use the Mailbox.  Use the “Weekly Work Folder”.

19 We celebrate holidays in many special ways.  This is a time when parents often come into help the children complete special projects.  Holidays are often used as a way to enrich the curriculum.

20 Good Choices are always rewarded.
