The GPS satellite system GPS stands for “Global Positioning System” A GPS is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location information when someone is near 4 GPS satellites Information includes location, time, and weather.

24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. in total. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available the everyday use of civilians.

GPS satellites are powered by solar energy. Most of the satellite systems have a back up power source in case there is a solar eclipse and they are unable to get their energy from the sun.

How does it work? GPS satellites circle the earth twice a day in a very precise orbit and transmit signal information to earth. These signals allow the information to always be as accurate as possible. triangulationis used to calculate the user's exact location.

triangulation sends waves from the satellites to the earth, and it is also used to calculate distance. Some very advanced GPS systems are able to produce 3D images of a location to better assist.

Errors Although over the years the GPS has been developed to be very accurate, it still has its faults. Some are as followed: The satellite signal slows as it passes through the atmosphere, making the GPS slow, and inaccurate. There are always new developments, and some times the GPS doest pick these up, and they can provide you with the wrong information.

Extras Along with the obvious geo-uses for a GPS there are many other uses. Some include: GPS Chips for Pets Owners now implant a microchip into their cats and dogs so they can be found easily when they get lost. Parents will often leave some sort of tracking device (e.i a microchip, or GPS) in a book bag or purse to insure that they always know where to find their child.

Extras GPS to Track Packages Online shopping is becoming more and more common. New technologies have been created to make sure you know where you package is at all times. Most package carriers will track your package to each different postal office, but usually the most precise you can get is an “out for delivery” message.

GPS’s have become so common that most smart phones/super phones have a built in one that runs off the internet. This is great because the price of GPS devises are up words to $400.00 for a decent one. I truly believe that this is a very useful technology because of the very few cons, vs. the very large amount of use that comes from a simple devise.
