Different body systems help animals carry out basic life functions.
Skeletal system
Muscular system
Nervous system
Respiratory system
Circulatory system
Excretory system
Digestive system

3. What is a system?
A system is a group of parts, people, things that work together.
Example: The school system. How does it work?
For what we will be talking about is a system of body parts in an organism.
Can you name a system in your body?
Can you name a system that has nothing to do with science.?

4. Chapter Overview Animals have different organ systems.
By the end of this chapter you will be able to answer these questions:
How do animals move and sense changes? (Hint: 3 systems)
How do air and blood travel in the body?
(Hint: 3 systems)
How food is broken down?(Hint: 1 system)

5. How do animals move and sense changes?
Through these three systems:
The Skeletal system /bones
Muscular System /muscles
Nervous System /nerves
Animals use skeletal and muscular systems to move. The nervous system can sense and respond to changes.

6. How do air and blood travel in the body?
Through these three systems:
The Respiratory System / oxygen, lungs, breathing
The Circulatory System / heart, blood, going through your body
The Excretory System / removes waste, throws out the trash
The circulatory and respiratory systems transports or moves blood and oxygen. The excretory system removes waste or throws out bad stuff for your body.

7. How is food broken down? Through this system: The Digestive System /
food goes in, body takes the good stuff from the food, food goes out.
The digestive system breaks down food so animals can get the energy they need.

Supports body (Helps you stand)
Protects soft body organs (like a shield)

11. The Muscular System Made of strong tissue called muscles.
Vertebrates move when muscles shorten and pull on bones.
Invertebrates move by tensing muscles and relaxing.

The nerve cells join together to become nerves
Controls all the body systems
System has brain, nerves, spine

15. Respiratory System Brings oxygen to the blood and removes waste gas.
Small invertebrates do not have this! (ex: Worms)
Lungs, gills

Carries oxygen, water, and food to blood cells.
Heart, blood vessels, and blood Heart is made up of strong muscle tissue.
Fish has 2 chambers in their heart
Amphibians 3 chambers in their heart
Mammals 4 chambers in our hearts.

Liver, kidney, bladder, skin, lungs a. Liver and kidney filter waste from the blood b. Skin sweats excess (too much) minerals c. lungs, gills remove waste gas

Animals digest food in different ways
a. Sponge turns food into tiny pieces (small particles)
b. Simple invertebrates eat food and throws out waste from the same opening.
c. Segmented worms eat in one hole and comes out of the tail. (2 openings)

d. Reptile, amphibian have a more complex digestive system.
e. Mammals also have a complex digestive system that breaks down food for the blood to take.
