What is missio:Engage! missio:Engage! is full of possibilities for us as we navigate our transition to being a parish and moving into the First Church in 2013. – Who are we as a congregation? – What are our gifts? – How is the Holy Spirit calling us to serve our surrounding community? – Who can we be to visitors and newcomers to our church?

Road Map

Our Gifts The missio:Engage! team would like to thank everyone who participated in celebrating the gifts we find within our congregation by adding a brick to the foundation of our church as symbolized on our bulletin board. We’ve read all your gifts and learned a little more about you; the people of St. Augustine. Some among us are full of energy, courageous and fun-loving, with a strong sense of hope and passion to follow God’s ways. Some among us are genuine, humble, giving and helpful, with a strong sense of service to do God’s will. Some among us are leaders, assertive, wise administrators, dedicated, committed and faithful in God’s work. Some among us sing beautifully, play instruments, weave, work wood, quilt, write, paint and create masterpieces to God’s glory. Some among us are hospitable, warm, inviting, excellent cooks, who are thoughtful, kind, compassionate and caring of God’s people. Some among us are seekers of truth, prayerful, healers, worshipful, faithful and thoughtful students of God’s word. Some among us are patient, caregivers, who love children, animals and reach out to the world nurturing God’s family. Some among us are forgiving, honest, transparent, with all-encompassing hearts who bring God’s peace. We are the bricks; worn, broken, sharp, chipped, strong and crumbling all mortared together with God’s love; the foundation, the family that is St. Augustine. We need each other and we need God. We are a safe place to seek and to grow in faith. We celebrate our diversity, the gifts we have to share, the needs we to hope to serve as we open our doors wide with welcome, extending a most heartfelt and sincere invitation to share our journey. 5

How Can we Meet the Needs of the Community? Who are the “people of peace?” 10

The Person of Peace, Missional Communities, by Reggie McNeal 11 In Luke 9 and 10, Matthew 10, and Mark 6, Jesus gives an often- overlooked strategy for our gaining entrance and winning favor with a community that we are attempting to penetrate with the gospel. He admonished his disciples to find a person of peace who would serve as a gatekeeper to allow them passage into the community. The person of peace is someone who welcomes you, serves you, and responds to you. Most likely a personal bond can be established and developed into a relationship that eventually opens up a whole network of relationships. This approach to evangelism proves organic and relationally rich. God prepares the person of peace for your arrival. Seeking this person is a way of partnering with the pre-evangelistic work of the Spirit. Pg. 62
