4 4.0 ISSUES  4.1. Agriculture Some of the villagers are very keen on planting vegetables, but are lacking seeds and essential materials for agriculture: seeds, water pump and tools such as watering cans, rake, spades etc. For the poorest they believe that time spent on agriculture is time spent away from earning money. They are impatient are living on a daily basis. Some wells for agriculture are still requested. The School Director is not receiving the state funding necessary for minor maintenance. We are still planning to build a library, but the students are not yet sufficiently prepared. We are still planning to build a library, but the students are not yet sufficiently prepared. We are still trying to discourage the Schools Authorities from inviting so many NGOs to distribute material on a one-off basis, disrupting NKFC programmes where the same materials are distributed, but after successful completion of courses, as a reward. NKFC implemented a scheme to resolve the current loss of motivation and frequent absences of the teachers due to low wages and the frequently delayed payments of salaries, which is subsequently resulting in a lack of control of the pupils and their performances. NKFC implemented a scheme to resolve the current loss of motivation and frequent absences of the teachers due to low wages and the frequently delayed payments of salaries, which is subsequently resulting in a lack of control of the pupils and their performances. NKFC is preparing a fundraising event at the end of the year (2009) to raise enough funds to complement the $20 per month salary that each teacher receives for the school year, through a grand Tree Sale. NKFC Agriculture Team is helping the teachers and students to plant a specific amount of tree saplings. The idea will also lead them to feeling a sense of responsibility, as the missing or dying trees would not bring the targeted funds. During the holiday period each child will take care of “their trees” at home, with the supervision of the NKFC staff working in the villages and the village Agent. (NKFC is paying the salary for a local Agent per village to follow NKFC work, to assist the different Teams and report back on any problems). We are hoping that the Tree Project will motivate the parents to help their children and begin to take a more active role in the school life. We are hoping to put in place a Parent Committee so that this sort of project could be repeated at the initiative of the Parents Committee. We are encouraging parents to have a voice in the education of their children, and not be dependent on NGOs and the authorities. 5  4.3Healthcare / Hygiene The Team is trying to discourage villagers from going to cut their burning wood from the forest as they are exposing themselves to mosquitoes (and thus possibly Malaria). The Team is required to repeatedly provide the Hygiene training to make it a habit for the villagers - it is a slow and frustrating programme. The discipline taught in the Dance School has helped with this element of the hygiene programme, and more families are enrolling in the Family Planning workshops.  4.4Water Policy / Maintenance The families selling their lands are not undertaking their responsibility to ensure that the new owner continues to allow the (eligible) users of the well access, or to maintain the well. The villagers claim to be too poor to repair and maintain the well, the Team is trying hard to resolve and help this issue. The minor repairs at the schools are not taken care of and again the Team is negotiating and helping to resolve the matter. 6 5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS  5.1 Agriculture Seeds of vegetables needed to supply the restaurants and hotels or guest houses have been requested. The French Medical Student Team arriving in June to teach vitamins and malnutrition and family-home garden. Other seeds, paddy rice and ginger are requested, as well as tools and wells for agriculture. The Team carefully donate the seeds to families who are seriously committed to planting. Many schools are built in Cambodia, but are not in use because of the lack of teachers. NKFC should investigate the possibility of endorsing training courses for the current teachers. Most villagers are very interested and the program is helping the villagers to understand how to avoid contamination, serious diseases, dangers of snakebites, malaria and they are now more comfortable and confident in the control of the growth of their family. 7 6.0 FUTURE PLANS 1. To progressively enrol the groups of families in each village to participate in NKFC workshops on education and training. 2. To consolidate the hygiene and home gardens programme by visiting the families, door-to-door, who have previously received training. 3. To continue the workshops in compost making, animals feeding, practice in home gardens, hygiene, basic health and vaccination. 4. To complete the targeted number of trees planted for the Fundraising. 5. To maintain regular contact with the local authorities. 6. To encourage the villagers to regularly send their children to school and to take them to local health centre if they are sick. 7. To help and support the Staff in the management of their programmes. 8. To motivate people to join the community. 9. To continue to evaluate the need for wells, latrines, schools and skills workshops. 10. To award students and encourage them to work hard at school and on their agriculture plot and tree planting.
