15 Marking strategies Marking is an organized defensive strategy which aims to prevent a member of the opposing team from taking control of the ball There are three strategies for marking and they differ to each other according to duties assigned to the defenders, positioning and off-the-ball style. The there strategies for marking are; – Man to man marking – Zonal marking – Combined man to man and zonal marking

16 Man to Man Marking Man-to-man marking, or man marking, is a defensive strategy where defenders are assigned a specific opposition player to mark rather than covering an area of the pitch. The greatest man marking performance was done by Claudio Gentile in 1982 World Cup in which his performance completely destroyed a young Diego Maradona http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= MvK2z6eUbAE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= MvK2z6eUbAE

23 Zonal defending Zonal marking is a defensive strategy where defenders cover an area of the pitch rather than marking a specific opponent. If an opponent moves into the area a defender is covering, the defender marks the opponent. If the opponent leaves this area, then marking the opponent becomes the responsibility of another defender.
