RESULTS – EXPERIENCE OF PARTICIPATING PILOT By T R Price DERA Boscombe Down UK

INTRODUCTION l Tim Price l Project Test Pilot for DERA BAC 1-11 research aircraft since 1996 l 94 EFMS flights l >230 flying hours l 42 demo flights l Pilot on all PD1 & PD3 flights

RESULTS l Overall: l Participants are to be congratulated on their achievements l PHARE should be regarded as a major success

Experimental Flight Management System l A natural progression from current-generation FMS (as fitted to Airbus / Boeing) l Pilots should be able to adapt to its use easily l Compatible with technology developed for ADS(B) and FANS l Should be easy to use with CPDLC

Research Route

EFMS (continued) l Meteorological database l 4D Control Achieved Accuracy Achieved Accuracy

AHMI l A irborne H uman M achine I nterface

AHMI (continued) l In BAC 1-11

AHMI (continued) l In BAC 1-11 l In modernflightdecks l In modern flightdecks

AHMI (continued) l In BAC 1-11 l Workload for pilots l In modernflightdecks l In modern flightdecks

AHMI (continued) l Evolution during PHARE l Touch screen l Rollerball

Use of AHMI l Initialisation and data entry l Inspection of route & constraints l Editing of route l Time-constraints

Avionics Requirements l Should not change substantially with introduction of PHARE concept l Very accurate navigation is a must l GPS and IRS in en-route phase l Galileo, WAAS, in terminal phase (RNP-1 likely) l Satellite and VHF datalinks l Accurate computer performance model for each aircraft type l Met database

VISION FOR THE FUTURE l My opinions alone l BIG PICTURE l Airspace congestion l The Prize l Tims Top Tip #1: The status quo ante is not an option

Acceptance Issues l Implementation of PHARE concepts will be harder for ATCOs to accept than pilots Peter Bone of AEA Technology Consulting warns: The ATCO may soon be removed, or remote, from the (ATC) system. Effectively he or she will be policing the system as opposed to being part of it. © Royal Aeronautical Society 1999 Peter Bone of AEA Technology Consulting warns: The ATCO may soon be removed, or remote, from the (ATC) system. 16 Acceptance Issues (2) l Genius of PHARE: l Humans in the loop at both ends ATCO Issues : ATCO Issues : Pay & skill Pay & skill l Impact of IT l Status

Acceptance Issues (3) l Tims Top Tip #2: Adrenaline does NOT lubricate ATM systems l PHARE will be to ATCOs what FBW was to pilots l The system MUST be reliable and fail-safe

Operational Issues l Investment by airlines l Ideal flight profile l Annoyances: l Standard Flight Levels l Open and Closed Constraints

Regulatory Issues l How is the transition to a 4D environment going to happen? l Height-encoding transponders must be mandatory for everything that flies, except:

SUMMARY Congratulations to all those involved in a highly-successful program. I have been privileged to be a small part of it. Please dont lose the opportunity to make it happen!

CONCLUSION To those who said there was no need for any airborne research in PHARE: A quote, from Ken Szalai, director of NASA Dryden

Flight is reality - anything else is just pure fantasy! CONCLUSION
