Curriculum Night Ms. Frain 7S Science Come on in and take a seat!

About Ms. Frain Former kyrene student Education Bachelors from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelors Degree in Biology Secondary Education, Chemistry Minor, and a Middle Grades Science Endorsement Working on a masters in science education through the Phoenix Zoo/Miami university fellowship program through Northern Arizona University Previous teaching In northern Arizona

Curriculum Outline 1st Quarter Scientific Process Measurement Microbiology 2nd Quarter Ecology 3rd Quarter Astronomy 4th Quarter Geology

How We Learn Hands-on activities and labs Group, Partner, Individual, Class collaboration Cross-curricular (math, social studies, language arts, etc.) Scientific Inquiry

Typical Day in Science Class Every day starts with bellwork Students learn new information All notes on Prezi’s Students apply new information Labs, activities, worksheets Students reflect on learning Very seldom homework

Click Ms. Frain under classrooms On the website, click 7S science calendar Then click the unit link

Unit Bellwork and presentations What we do every day Important handouts

Learning Goals Based on State and College and Career Ready standards Drive Instruction Determine student’s grade

Scientific Process Learning goal and scale Students will be able to use the following inquiry processes: formulate hypothesis based on observations, plan and conduct investigations, perform measurements using the appropriate scientific tools and metric units, record data, organize and analyze data, communicate results of investigations. 43210 100%90%70%60%50% I am able to thoroughly and correctly use the inquiry processes and make in- depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught. I am able to correctly use the following inquiry processes: Formulate hypothesis based on observations Plan and conduct investigations Record data Organize and analyze data Communicate results of investigations Perform measurements with appropriate scientific tools Use metric units correctly I am able to correctly define most of the inquiry processes but I still have questions on one of these concepts before being able to use them. With help, I am able to correctly identify the inquiry processes. I still have questions on these concepts before being able to understand with confidence. I do not know anything about the subject or I have made no attempt to learn.

How this relate to what students know….

Quarter Grades 90%Assessment 10% Practice You will see 2-3 Summative tests per quarter = 90% You may see several common formative tests before each Summative May see Practice work recorded = 10%

Conversion Scale to Traditional Grades Average Scale Score across Multiple Goals Traditional Grade 3.75-4.00A+ 3.26-3.74A 3.00-3.25A- 2.84-2.99B+ 2.67-2.83B 2.50-2.66B- 2.34-2.49C+ 2.17-2.33C 2.00-2.16C- 1.76-1.99D+ 1.26-1.75D 1.00-1.25D- Below 1.00F 4.0 Scale will be entered and averaged for a final grade. Example: Tests for Quarter 1: Standard A: 3 Standard B: 3.5 Standard C: 2.5 AVERAGE: 3.0 GRADE: A-
