1 History of Ancient Egypt Social Studies Period:6 December 8,2010

2 Old Kingdom 2600 – 2300 B.C. To the Egyptians a pharaoh was a ruler, priest, and a god. The farmers built pyramids for the pharaoh. The pyramids were to preserve the bodies and after they died there souls were weighed on a scale and if it was balanced on a scale and if it level they would go to the after life. The Egyptians were polytheistic. Polytheistic is when they believe in many gods.

3 Middle Kingdom 2300B.C. – 1650 B.C. Government officials were jealous of the pharaohs power and took control of Egypt. The Middle Kingdom ended in 1786 B.C. when the Hyksos invaded them using horse drawn, chariots iron and bronze, and composite bows. About 150 years later Ahmose led an army with the Hyksos weapons and drove them out of Egypt

4 New Kingdom 1550B.C. -671B.C. The Egyptians pharoahs were warring pharoahs. They would go up and down the Nile and capture slaves. Also the empire got bigger because they would trade. Over time priests of Amon –Re gained much power and wealth. Then a new Pharaoh named Amenhotep IV came to throne. He closed all temples of Amon – Re. Also Egypt was in war and didn’t have very much money but they had to buy iron ore.

5 Pharaohs The first king of upper Egypt was Narmer. The Pharaohs roles were to make sure new irrigation dykes were repaired and built for a good harvest, also he ordered brick granaries, and he chose government officials.

6 Hieroglyphics Hieroglyphics is a kind of writing using pictures that stood for words. A French soldier ran into the Rosetta Stone. Jean Francois Champollion translated it

7 King Tutankhamen King Tut was the youngest Pharaoh Egypt ever had. When he was elected on the throne he was 9 years old. King Tuts tomb was so important because it was the hardest tomb to find and he had the best preserved body Howard Carter found his tomb.

8 The pyramids were built from 2300 B.C. to 1650 B.C. The name of this time pyramid was the middle kingdom. They would get stone, push and pull to the Nile, put it on a raft, float boulders down the Nile, made a mud ramp and then built the pyramid. The Great pyramid was for King Khufu and his family. 9 MUMMIES First they would wash the body, then pull the brain out with a large hook through the nose, next they would pull out the stomach, lungs, live, and intestines and put natron in to dry the body then they would remove natron and wash the body, finally they would wrap him in linen. The purpose was to keep the bodies well preserved and so when the soul would come back to the body it would know it was him.

10 Geography Of Egypt Egypt is located in North East Africa. Egypt is on the continent of Africa The latitude and longitude of Cairo is 29 degrees North 30 degrees East. Egypt is mostly extreme. Extreme is very hot weather. Also Egypt is very dry.
