Assessment The evaluation or estimation of the nature, quality, or ability of something (or someone) for a specific purpose.

Aesthetic Concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty.

Automation The use of largely automatic equipment in a system of manufacturing or other production process.

Breakthrough A sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development.

Essential Question In Engineering terms, what is a breakthrough?

Biomimicry The design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modeled on biological entities and processes.

CAD Computer-aided design : The use of computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design.

CAM Computer-aided Manufacturing : The use of computer systems to assist in the manufacture, or modification,a design.

CNC Computer Numerical Control: The use of computer systems to assist in the control of manufacturing machined tools.

Closed System A physical system that does not interact with other systems. (Also called isolated system)

Collaboration The action of working with someone to produce or create something.

Conceptualization To form a distinct idea or ideas; and especially to interpret something in an abstract way.

Design Brief A design brief is a written document for a project developed in concert with the person needing the design.

Design Envelope Specified requirements that define a system’s operational capabilities and limitations.

Efficiency Achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense-- especially of a system or machine.

Engineering The branch of science and technology concerned with the design of buildings, engines, machines, materials, processes and structures.

Ergonomics (Human factors) The study of people's efficiency in their working environment so as to provide optimum comfort and to avoid stress or injury.

Integrated system A system that has combined different functions together in order to work as one entity.

Interface A point of provision where two systems, subjects, organizations, etc., meet and interact.

Iteration The repetition of a process or set of procedures until a specified condition is met.

Lateral Thinking Problem solving using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic.

Lettering The act, art, or process of forming letters.

Mock-up A model or replica of a machine or structure, used for instructional or experimental purposes.

Model A three-dimensional, mathematical, or virtual representation of an idea or object-- typically on a smaller scale than the original.

Nomenclature A system of names or terms, or the rules for forming these terms in a particular field of arts or sciences

Open System A physical system that interacts with other systems

Optimal Match The best possible choice of all option matches considering design requirements vs. tradeoffs.

Parameters Numerical or other measurable factors that define a system or set the conditions of its operation.

Rapid Prototyping A group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part using three-dimensional computer aided design data.

Reverse Engineering The reproduction of another manufacturer's product following detailed examination of its construction or composition.

Skill Set A person's range of skills or abilities.

System A set of connected things or parts forming a complex whole, in particular.

Subsystem A self-contained system within a larger system.

Trade Off A balance achieved between two desirable but incompatible features; a compromise.

Universal Of, affecting, or done by all people or things in the world or in a particular group; applicable to all cases.

Usability Serviceability: the quality of being able to provide good service

Universal Design Universal design refers to ideas meant to create environments and products that are accessible to people with and without disabilities.

User Centered Design A design process in which the needs, wants, and limitations of end users of a product are given extensive attention at each stage of the design process.

Virtual Reality Computer-generated simulation of a three- dimensional environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way.
