Design Partition, Project Plan, Task Assignments and Conceptual Designs September 13, 2006 Team Moondogs Chris Culver Rahul Kirtikar Elias Krauklis Christopher Sampson Michael Widerquest

Design Partition Goal The goal of this project is to create a canister which allows a person to easily and inexpensively compact trash. The goal of this project is to create a canister which allows a person to easily and inexpensively compact trash. The system shall be manual and not require permanent installation. The system shall be manual and not require permanent installation. Subsystems Subsystems Trash Canister, Container, Enclosure, and Compactor Trash Canister, Container, Enclosure, and Compactor

Subsystems Trash Canister Trash Canister Responsible for sustaining the unit that holds the trash Responsible for sustaining the unit that holds the trash Square, circular, and rectangular canisters Square, circular, and rectangular canisters Trash Container Trash Container The actual unit that holds the trash The actual unit that holds the trash Trash bags, separate canisters, and plastic linings Trash bags, separate canisters, and plastic linings Trash Enclosure Trash Enclosure Encloses the trash into the trash canister from the visual public Encloses the trash into the trash canister from the visual public Hinged lids, removable lids, pull-out systems, and flaps Hinged lids, removable lids, pull-out systems, and flaps

Project Plan

Foot Pedal Design

First, compacts the trash by placing the lid on the container First, compacts the trash by placing the lid on the container Then, a foot pump motion lifts an inner trash container straight up onto a compacting plate stabilized by ones hand Then, a foot pump motion lifts an inner trash container straight up onto a compacting plate stabilized by ones hand

Advantages / Disadvantages Advantages Maximizes a person ability to apply force by using the leg to lift the inner container + Applies an additional force from the person placing the lid on the container + Eliminates the need for trash bags + Disadvantages Can contain only a moderate level of trash - The inner container needs to be continually cleaned to keep sanitary - Circular design could pose problems for rectangular trash articles - Interesting A simple design that should have a large compression ratio

Grinder Design

Advantages / Disadvantages Advantages Simple and reliable build design + Easy intuitive of operation for user + Large crank handle allows for increased grinding force + Concealed trash receptacle is sanitary. Disadvantages Possibility of trash backup - Not all types/sizes of trash could fit - Design may not produce most efficient compacting ratio. - Interesting The grinder wheels have the ability to shred and destroy trash that a normal compactor may not be able to accomplish.

Side Trash Compactor

The trash lid has to be removed to lift the side panel out from in front of the compaction plate The trash lid has to be removed to lift the side panel out from in front of the compaction plate Once the side panel is removed the lid can be replaced and the compaction can begin Once the side panel is removed the lid can be replaced and the compaction can begin The compaction in this design has the ability to be very strong since a foot mechanism or a long hand crank can be placed one foot off the ground The compaction in this design has the ability to be very strong since a foot mechanism or a long hand crank can be placed one foot off the ground The side panel may not be needed if a trash bag could be used in this design The side panel may not be needed if a trash bag could be used in this design

Advantages / Disadvantages Advantages from the side This design can use many different mechanisms to compact it from the side + The foot or a long hand crank can be used for more strength since the center of compaction is about a foot off the ground + Could be used with trash bags or without trash bags potentially + Disadvantages Removal of side panel could cause potential leakages and problems (if a trash bag is able to be used then the side panel would not be needed) - A outer container would be needed to house the compaction mechanism on the side - Would compact the trash to one side causing the user to have to place the trash on a certain side of the trash can - Interesting A unique compaction design from the side which could maximize the users strength since the center of compaction is about a foot off of the ground

Auger Design Auger with grooves reversed to cause compaction instead of extrusion Auger with grooves reversed to cause compaction instead of extrusion Trash is placed into canister through lid opening Trash is placed into canister through lid opening With an adequate amount of trash the auger is rotated which causes compaction With an adequate amount of trash the auger is rotated which causes compaction Spring Loaded plate is then released to allow waste to fall into canister Spring Loaded plate is then released to allow waste to fall into canister Auger Crank Lid Canister Release Point

Advantages / Disadvantages Advantages No need to remove lid to insert trash or operate compacting mechanism + Simple cranking mechanism in a fixed position + Auger will supply adequate amount of compaction + Disadvantages Difficult to have pin release support force of compaction Difficult to have pin release support force of compaction - Container may have to be much wider to allow adequate compaction - Circular design could pose problems for rectangular trash articles - Interesting The crank is fixed in one place and does not ascend or descend

Hydraulic Lift and Compaction Design Hydraulic bottle jack attached to base of outer can Hydraulic bottle jack attached to base of outer can Easily operated by a foot pedal Easily operated by a foot pedal Capable of applying hundreds of pounds of force Capable of applying hundreds of pounds of force Upper lid is retracted into the trash can to compress the trash as a mechanism of the hydraulic jack. Upper lid is retracted into the trash can to compress the trash as a mechanism of the hydraulic jack. Hydraulic Lift and Compaction Design

Side view of open compactorOpen compactor view

Advantages / Disadvantages Advantages Capable of applying force from both the top and bottom + Foot pedal is easy to handle and operate without being cumbersome + Bottle jacks are easy to operate and require almost no maintenance + Disadvantages Mechanisms are more advanced to incorporate the use of the upper lid - Range of motion is still limited by aesthetics of the upper compaction arm - Inside of lid could become messy after compaction - Interesting The lid can actually serve as a compacting tool by a mechanism that translates the force provided by the hydraulic jack.

Hydraulic Bottle Jack Design Inverted hydraulic Bottle Jack attached to inside of lid Inverted hydraulic Bottle Jack attached to inside of lid Easy to operate by pumping the lever to extend the jack arm Easy to operate by pumping the lever to extend the jack arm Capable of applying several thousand pounds of force Capable of applying several thousand pounds of force Easy to retract the arm by a turn of the lever to release hydraulic pressure Easy to retract the arm by a turn of the lever to release hydraulic pressure Side removal of trash bags Side removal of trash bags Retracted Bottle Jack

Hydraulic Bottle Jack Design Extended Bottle JackBottle Jack Close-Up

Advantages / Disadvantages Advantages Capable of applying 1-½ tons of force + Lever is easy to handle and operate without being cumbersome + Bottle jacks are easy to operate and require almost no maintenance + Disadvantages Bottle jack will be heavy (6lbs) and will have to be secured tightly - Range of motion is dependent on size of the jack (so a greater range of motion requires a larger jack) - Trash would have to be inserted from the side as opposed to the top eliminating the option of throwing away oversized objects - Interesting Amount of force that can be applied is the greatest out of current concepts, but sides of container would have to be able to withstand such a great amount of pressure
