3. 3 History Dec 1997 –IBM loaned PCs with Vocaltec cards to CERN, FNAL and DESY Mar 1998 –Cisco loaned 3640 routers/VoIP cards to CERN, FNAL and DESY Sep 1998 –SLAC bought 3640 router/VoIP cards Jan 1999 –LBNL bought 2 3640 routers/VoIP cards, one for PBX connection, other for QoS testing

4. 4 Testing IBM/Vocaltec –PC based, Windows/NT –performance and scaling problems –gaps in speech heard –interfaced well with PBX via standard phone jack –still in limited use at CERN, FNAL and DESY

5. 5 Testing (con’t) Cisco 3640 routers with VoIP cards –good sound quality –QoS, IP precedence options –FXS card, connects to telephones, no problems –FXO card, connects to PBX, many problems works at FNAL, not at CERN, DESY, SLAC many PBX phone jacks do not have supervisory disconnect connections stay up after both sides hang up

6. 6 Testing (con’t) Cisco 3640 routers with VoIP cards (con’t) –E&M card, connects to PBX, some problems works at SLAC and LBNL needs a special PBX connection and RJ-48S jack hard to get correct PBX configuration –BRI-ISDN card, connects to digital PBX, problems installed at CERN, FNAL and DESY, not yet working can’t dial number after connecting must pass number when connecting

9. 9 Summary(con’t) Labs prefer Cisco over IBM/Vocaltec because of better sound quality, scaling problems with PC based solutions, and prior experience configuring Cisco routers Many problems connecting Cisco VoIP cards to various PBXs, Cisco needs better documentation Need a better dial-plan and/or Gatekeeper –currently use a 1 digit prefix for each lab
