3 ELL? LEP? EL? Emergent bilingual? In New York, an ELL is a student who has been identified as Limited English proficient, and has not yet achieved proficiency on the NYSESLAT exam. An ELL must achieve proficiency in speaking and listening to English, as well as reading and writing. What is the best label for my student?

4 What’s the truth about ELLs? True or False? English is easy. You can learn English in a year. Children always learn language better than older people. Bilingualism can confuse students. Most ELLs are immigrants. ELLs should learn language BEFORE content. Using Spanish in school or home will delay English.

5 How long does it take to learn English?

6 BICS vs. CALP BICSCALP Basic speaking skills. Everyday conversations. In the cafeteria, on the bus… Usually takes between 6 months to 2 years years to develop. Academic language. Presentations, essays, or responses to school assignments. More complicated grammar and syntax. Usually develops in 3 to 6 years. Less contextual

8 ESL Levels -Beginner: 3 units of ESL instruction/day (push-in time not included) -Intermediate: 2 units of ESL instruction/day (push-in time not included) -Advanced: 1 unit of ESL instruction/day (push-in time not included) Testing Accommodations -All ESL students, including transition students, receive testing accommodations on all local and state tests. These accommodations include: - extra time - third reading of listening component (ELA only) - separate location - bilingual glossaries (except foreign language) - use of native language and English versions of exams (except ELA) - writing response permitted in native language (except ELA)
