5 Foundation of an Effective Mentoring/Coaching Program  A review of strategies regarding an effective mentoring/coaching program that boards can implement to nurture trust  Important Elements of a Strong Mentoring relationship:  Mutual and Reciprocal  Trusting  Confidential  Purposeful and productive  Supportive and encouraging  Collaborative  Developmental and evolving over time  Reflective and growth-oriented  Based on accurate communication

6 Mentoring and Coaching Training  Clarifying expectations and providing opportunities to share with each other is conducive to effective programs  Essential Skills for Mentors:  Focused Conversations  Active Listening  Powerful Questioning

7 Matching Mentors with Mentees  Based on trust, respect and confidentiality  Mentees have the opportunity to provide input into the criteria for their mentor  Consideration for school context is important  The Ontario Leadership Framework can be used as a basis for matching

8 No Fault Exit Strategy  The strategy should be determined at the beginning of the program  It involves a mutual agreement, emphasized to both mentors and mentees  The agreement should specify that either party has the option of discontinuing the mentor relationship for any reason  The No Fault Exit Strategy should not be used as an excuse to avoid dealing with a difficult situation  Ensure that no blame is attached to either partner in a No Fault Exit

9 Alignment of Principal Performance Appraisal and Mentoring/Coaching Goals  All mentees are required to complete a Learning Plan  Individuals can adjust the Goals and Strategies within the Ministry template to the context of the Mentee Learning Plan
