4 Trustbusting Trust: legal bodies created to hold stock in many companies Standard Oil: largest oil cooperation led by John D. Rockefeller Lowered prices to get rid of competitors Thus creating MONOPOLIES Sherman Anti-Trust Act 1890

6 1902 Coal Strike 140,000 Coal Miners PA Want 20 % increase of pay 9 hour work days Ability to form a union Company owners not okay with this Roosevelt calls all in to WH Miners get 10% increase + 9 hour work day no closed shop, and cannot strike for 3 years

7 Railroad Regulation Elkins Act of 1903: Made it illegal to allow RR Officials to give, and shippers to receive, rebates for using particular rail lines Also stopped the RR companies from raising rates without telling the public Gave power to the Interstate Commerce Commission: which would prevent wealthy railroad owners to control lines and raise fares. Hepburn Act 1906: strictly limited the distribution of free RR passes. Boosted government power in business.

8 Regulating Food and Drug Industry Meat Inspection Act 1906: Cleanliness of meatpacking plants, ensure consumer safety Pure Food and Drug Act 1906: halted the sale of contaminated foods and medicines and called for truth labeling

10 Conservation and Natural Resources Conservation efforts Land, parks, and limiting companies from using up resources. Gifford Pinchot: head of U.S Forest Service, keeping federal land which was exempt from private sale. Some land to be preserved, others developed for common good National Reclamation Act of 1902: “Newlands Act” money from selling federal land will fund large-scale irrigation projects

11 Civil Rights Not top priority for most progressives Nonetheless; Roosevelt tried to help. Invited Booker T. Washington to White House Booker T. Washington: Head of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, advocated for blacks to educate themselves, become useful, and accepting segregation. – Most respected by powerful whites

12 Civil Rights Continued W.E.B Du Bois: Demanded immediate social and economic equality for all African Americans. Helped establish the NAACP. NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Aimed for full equality among the races. Not as successful in Progressive Movement: focused on the needs of middle-class whites. Presidents which followed Roosevelt did little to support civil rights.
