Birdie Accessories: Safety Chain G-Clamp Gel Frame Barn Doors 13 amp plug Halogen bulbs Function: This is the smallest of all stage lights. This light is best used at art exhibitions to light exhibits, it can also be used to shine on the audience for effect but not enough to draw attention from the main performance onstage. Comparison: As it is used for subtle lighting, I would choose this light over others such as a LED as an LED is too bright blind people such as in an art exhibit whereas a Birdie will give it enough light for it to stand out. Scenario: lights iare needed to light up the audience. this light could be used as it provides enough light to light the audience including them in the show but not take the attention away from the stage.

Indigo 6500 LED moving head The light I am going to use is the Indigo 6500 LED Moving head 180w LED output gobos and prism. The Indigo 6500 is on the market to replace the MSR575 and HMI575 discharge spot fixtures. Combining multiple LED sources and unique optics, the Indigo 6500 is an economic and compact solution for small to medium productions or installations. The Indigo 6500 is another leap forward for LED in its occupation at the entertainment lighting market. this can be operated by Sunlite software which means you can pre-program before a show which is very useful. it can rotate 360 degrees it can tilt, pan and is very versatile in its movement. it has interchangeable gobos and many colour + white. Price: £1,170.00 Brand: showtec

Parcan Accessories: Gel Frame Adjustable arm Bulb is encased unit 15 amp plug G-clamp Safety Chain Beam Angle: 24 degrees Function: Used in music gigs for general cover and is also aesthetically pleasing. Used during a ‘Chase’ sequence and also to add depth with colour. Comparison: Par Cans are good for lighting up certain areas of the stage, I would choose this light in place of a Source Four as a spotlight would be too specific and not provide a good general cover, also the Par Cans are excellent at creating chases. Scenario: in a Music Gig. I would chose a Parcan in this scenario as it is great for general cover and creating chase sequences.

LEDJ Stratos wash I have chose the LEDJ Stratos Wash. The Stratos Wash and Stratos Spot feature an infinite colour pallette allowing the user to create thousands of washes of constantly changing colour effects. 336 Ultra Bright 10mm LEDs ensure that light coverage is both even and powerful. it has sound control via a internal microphone, 336 LEDs with RGB colour mixing and individual control of each colours. Brand: LEDJ Price: £129.00 I will use this to light up the stain glass windows in the church. This is different to the moving head as it is a fixed wash and is used to light up a wide area.

Set up of Lights On Saturday the 7th December we met up at Street at 1, we then proceeded to go to the church. after unloading moving heads, cables and stratus wash's we each chose a light and then set it up in the main room, we had to make sure that no cables were running along the floor and to make it look neat! I set up a stratus wash LED light up near a pillar so it lit it up, we did not DMX it, I plugged it straight to the mains with the use of an extension cable then inky used 3 channels and put it on a colour run through. I then helped others out with their lights. we ran out of time and as a result not everyone could have a go using sunlight with the moving heads so we will do this soon. The pictures below are of me setting up some Stratos wash lights

Pebble Convex (Fresnel) features: G-Clamp Safety Chain Gel Frame Barn Doors Pebble Shaped Lens 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 7 – 38 degrees Function: Used for a general cover of light but can also be used in place of a spotlight as the lens is different from other Fresnel lenses. Comparison: I would choose a P.C over a Par Can as both provide general cover but a P.C’s light beam can be directed in whatever way the performer wants whereas a Par Can cannot. Scenario: when a Spotlight is needed but none are left. This light would be useful as it has the same lens as a spotlight.

Different types of Equinox lights The Equinox Nimbus laser creates a really impressive new style effect from it’s extremely small and compact housing. Multiple dazzling effects are created which have to be seen to be believed. Using wide angle projection, it displays hundreds of beams, filling your venue or dance floor with a mesmerizing light show. The Blaze from Equinox offers a stunning, rich multi- coloured display similar to a traditional moonflower. With sound activation it projects pin sharp beams which stands shoulder to shoulder with any other moonflower around. Virtually no heat is produced and with no lamp to replace it will prove to be a first class light effect for thousands of hours without consuming a single lamp.

Selecon (Fresnel) Accessories: Barn Doors 2 Adjustable Knobs Rigid Circular Lens 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 6 – 60 degrees Function: This light is used for ‘General Washes’ and can have its light manipulated. Comparison: I would use this light in place of a Source Four as its light beam can be manipulated and can be used in general washes. Scenario: if a light is needed for a general wash. This light provides a frosted beam of light and therefore will spread right around the room.

Types of Lights Today I started of revising what I already knew about lighting, then moved on to Fresnel, Profile, PC (Pebble Convex), Flood and Parcan. Fresnel: this light uses a circular reflector, it’s not very precise but gives a soft edged beam and also spreads a great deal of light. The light can be focused but cannot project a gobo image. It’s not very efficient but works well on states, especially when close. Profile: this light is very efficient and uses one or more lenses, and an ellipse ideal reflector to focus the light, they usually have a longer body than the Fresnel, and has little spill. The can use gobos and shutters, most have a fixed beam angle. They are good for projections and mid/long range. PC (Pebble Convex): its a cross between the Fresnel and the Profile, the beam is similar to an out of focus Profile, but is more efficient than the Fresnel and produces less spill. Flood: it’s an uncontrolled light and produces a wide illumination, it has no lens and relies on a large reflector to direct the light out, this produces enormous amounts of spill. Flood lights are usually used to produce colour washes. Parcan: it’s a sealed lamp, consisting of a lens, filament and reflector. It’s got an extremely robust bulb able to operate at high temperatures and short flashes. It’s has a metal tube round the front of the bulb. It weighs light but produces a very bright, white light. It cannot be focused and is a soft ellipse wi little definition. It’s suited to a wide range of duties, mostly band lighting.

1K (Fresnel) Accessories: Safety Chain Barn Doors 15 amp plug Gel Frame G-Clamp Beam Angle: 74 degrees Function: This light can be used in a general wash and gives a more defused light. This light is mainly used as a backlight to define people on stage and make them look more 3D. Comparison: I would use this light in place of a Par Can as a 1K gives a more defused light and can make people stand out on stage as a backlight. Scenario: A Backlight is needed at a show. 1Ks are great for backlights as they are bright.

A recap of setting up lights Today we recapped DMX chains, we used 4 LED washes and 2 moving heads, we set them up in a chain, and worked out which channel they would use.

C.C.T. (Fresnel) Accessories: Rigid Glass Lens Safety Frame G-Clamp Smallest Fresnel Adjustable Knob Gel Frame Barn Doors 15 amp Plug Beam Angle: 18 – 57 degrees Function: Used for general cover. Has a rigid glass lens to give a defused spread of light. Beam angle is adjustable. Comparison: I would use this light in place of a P.C as this a C.C.T. has a defused light which blends in well whereas a P.C is very defined and will not blend in well. Scenario: a side light is needed at a show. We can use this light as it provides a general cover and can be positioned on a stand.

Lighting desk The RGBW4C by ADJ is a 32-channel RGB, RGBW or RGBA LED controller. It was designed to control any standard 3 or 4 channel group of LED fixtures where channel 1 is Red, channel 2 is Green, channel 3 is Blue and channel 4 is White or Amber. Up to 8 LED fixtures or fixture groups can independently be controlled via four fixture buttons. All LED fixtures or fixture groups must be set to run in DMX mode and be addressed four channels apart for independent control. The units control panel includes 9 direct access Static Colour/Chase buttons, which contain pre-programmed colour presets and chase programs, 3 user programmable colour preset buttons, 4 multi function faders that control RGBW intensities on the fly, as well as chase program Speed, chase program Fade Time and Master Dimmer. There is also an array of 8 buttons used to select the operation mode, including RGB Fade, Auto Run, Colour Macro, Chase, Sound Active, Strobe, Manual RGBW and Blackout modes. The RGBW4C is one of the simplest and most versatile LED controllers available today. Its ideal for D.J.s, nightclubs, lounges, bars and anyone that wants easy control of LED Pars, Bars, Floods or Panels.

Source Four (Modern Spotlight) features: G-clamp Safety chain Built in Shutters Gel Frame 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 19 to 50 degrees Function: Used to isolate objects or people on- stage with very bright light beam. The light can use different shapes because of the built in shutters. Can make either soft or very defined edges to light beam. Comparison: I would choose this over another light such as a Minuette Profile as the light beam on a Source Four is bright white whereas a Profile’s light beam is a brownish- white light, also a Profile does not have built in shutters whereas a Source Four does. Scenario: An Actor needs isolating on stage. A Source for is ideal for this situation as it is a spotlight which is made to isolate specific spots with a bright spot of light.

Pin spot Accessories: G-Clamp Safety Chain 13/15 amp plug Plastic coloured casing Function: This light is used when the user wants lights that will move to a certain point or around in general, these are usually characterized by bright colourful strobe lights. This light can also change colour without manually changing the gel frame. Comparison: I would use this light instead of an LED because this light is better at moving around whereas an LED cannot move around on its own. Scenario: A disco ball is being used and needs to be lit up. These lights are rather powerful and can easily light a disco ball with minimal effort.

Features of a Moving head Moving head They work moving the entire body, they could be “spot” fixtures or wash fixtures which are designed for a wider area. Moving mirror (scanners) They are stationary and a mirror, this redirects the light by tilting, panning and reflecting the light. The most common features of these automated lights are: Pan: moving from side to side, most have to pan settings, one is fast and one is slower and more precise. Tilt: moving up and down, again most have to, “coarse” and “fine”. Colour: there are two ways these lights can change: Dichroic filters in a colour wheel, only one colour can be chosen at a time and May or may not be replaced. Again dichroic filters, with the secondary colours, these can be mixed to create any colour. Zoom/Iris: used to zoom in and out. Gobo: they have a gobo wheel, some have two allowing you to mix gobos. Intensity: the brightness of the light, this can be controlled electronically. Shutter These are used to strobe the light. Other features which are moving lights, prisms, distorted glass and motor speeds. Many companies make accessories which are used to add moving functions to conventional, static and fixtures.

Minuette Profile (Classic Spotlight) Accessories: G-Clamp Safety Chain Gel Frame 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 15 – 30 degrees Function: This older spotlight was used before the Source Four was introduced, this light is considerably different from the newer version due to its light being a brownish-white light, the Profile also does not have built in shutters and must be placed manually. Comparison: I would use this light with a group of Profiles instead of using both a Source Four and a single Profile as the Source would draw more attention to the subject under the light because of its brighter light, therefore using Profiles would give equal light to all of the items/people underneath it. Scenario: when a window effect is needed on stage. This light uses a Gobo to create a window shape at a point on the stage.

Equipment I have looked at we have looked at laser’s for example, cam laser scan 1000 3D, this made 3d shapes using lasers. lasers work best when used with a smoke machine and when it is dark. you would find them at most disco/club environments. we have also looked at LED’s for example an LED wash, this spreads over a wide area creating a glow effect. these also work better in the dark. they are found also in a disco/club environment but also at corporate events and almost any where which is being lit up. we have has also looked at Gobo projectors these project a Gobo/ Logo onto a surface. again these work better in the dark. these are largely used at corporate events as their logo can be projected around the room/event. we have also looked at computer controlled lighting for example the Intimidator LED 350 this is controlled by the software Sun Lite, it use’s LED and also Gobo’s it can be controlled by the computer and presets can be made. again it works best in a dark environment. it is used a large gig’s, disco/club’s and corporate event.

LED Parcan Accessories: G-clamp Adjustable arm Safety chain 13 amp plug Beam Angle: 15 to 40 degrees Function: Used for general cover. Provides indirect beams of light. Can be controlled from the lighting desk. Can change colour automatically. Comparison: I would choose an LED Par Can over a regular Par Can as an LED is much better, an LED is more efficient as the diodes are energy saving bulbs, these also do not cause the light to heat up, an LED is also better by the fact it can change colour on its own and does not need gels to do this, this can be done directly from the light board. Scenario: for an event When a light that can create multiple colours is needed. I would use an LED Parcan for this as it is currently the only light which can change colour from the desk by itself.

Flood Light features: Safety Chain G-Clamp Gel Frame (can be used) 15 amp Plug 500 – 650 watts Beam Angle: 60 degrees Function: This light is used to literally ‘flood’ the audience with light, this can be used to make the audience feel like part of the show. Can also be used to shine on giant white sheets with gel frames for effect. Comparison: Using this light is much better for use on an audience then an LED because an LED is too specific and will not be able to light the entire audience. Scenario: a Cyclorama is the back wall or a cloth usually in white and used for projecting colour washes to create an effect I would use this light if a cyclorama was used. This flood light would be great as it will fill the entire Cyclorama with light.
