2 The two main purposes that semicolons serve: to join independent clauses that are closely related in thought and to prevent confusion when independent clauses or items in a series contain commas. Review: Semicolons

3 By definition, a horse is an animal that is more than 58 inches high at the highest point of the back ; anything less than this height is a pony. Example:
