1 The Development, Maintenance, and Use of Course Web Sites The Development, Maintenance, and Use of Course Web Sites Panel at the ACM SIGCSE 34th Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education, Reno, Nevada, 2003. Katy Börner, katy@indiana.edu School of Library and Information Science Indiana University

2 Katy Börner, Indiana University ACM SIGCSE Panel, 2003. I will Introduce Three Educational Projects Project Handin Web Pages Information Visualization Software Repository (Virtual) Reading Group

3 Katy Börner, Indiana University ACM SIGCSE Panel, 2003. Project Handin Web Pages Support the formation of teams and student collaboration, Facilitate the automatic handin of project results, and Enable students and instructors to provide constructive feedback on class projects. Example - Human Computer Interation, Spring 2002: http://ella.slis.indiana.edu/classes/handin/L542-S02/

11 Information Visualization Software Repository Complements the theoretical study of specific IV algorithms plus the critique and evaluation of existing applications. It facilitates the hands-on exploration, design, and customization of IVs for different user groups, visualization tasks, and data sets. It enables the comparison of different algorithms as well as the management of large class projects. Web site: http://iv.slis.indiana.edu/

20  Multiple visualizations of one data set can be generated simultaneously for comparison.  Non-programmers with a basic understanding of the included algorithms can use a graphical user interface to visualize their data sets.  Students can take on more complex class projects that resulted in diverse workshop and conference publications.

21 Katy Börner, Indiana University ACM SIGCSE Panel, 2003. (Virtual) Reading Group on Network and Cluster Analysis Meetings were held in a lecture room as well as virtually in a 3D online space. Guests in the lecture room met with guests in the 3D space and held question/answer sessions via a chat facility. Live audio and video streaming was used to ease communication. Several authors of discussed papers joined remotely. Web site: http://ella.slis.indiana.edu/~katy/ReadingGroup.html
