3 What is SNS? The Scottish Government’s ongoing programme to improve the consistency and availability of small area statistics; Public website (www.sns.gov.uk);www.sns.gov.uk Used as a single point for accessing small area statistics in Scotland; Indicators available across a variety of topics and geographies; Data zone is the core geography; Range of pre-defined and custom reports.

5 Functionality Pre-defined reports on a wide range of geographies (standard reporter);

11 Supported Geographies Core: –Data zone; –Intermediate Geography; –Multi-Member Wards; –Scottish Parliamentary Constituencies (both 2007 and 2011 boundaries); –Community Health Partnerships; –Local Authority; –Health Board; –Scotland.

12 Supported Geographies Non-standard: –Urban Rural Classification; –Deprived Areas; –Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies; –NUTS; –National Parks; –Highlands and Islands Enterprise Areas; –Urban Regeneration Areas.

13 Functionality Pre-defined reports on a wide range of geographies (standard reporter); Custom reports on user defined areas (advanced reporter);

21 Other Advanced Reporter Functionality Reports can be saved; URL’s can be generated for reports, so that they can be shared; User defined geographies can be saved and reused; Data and metadata can be exported as a csv or xml file.

22 Functionality Pre-defined reports on a wide range of geographies (standard reporter); Custom reports on user defined areas (advanced reporter); Data downloads.

23 Data Downloads Entire database; Individual indicators at chosen geography; Automatic downloads – emails you a link when data is updated; Data zone and intermediate zone shapefiles.

24 Data Upload Process Data added via a password protected admin website; Generic csv files are used for the upload of data/metadata; Metadata can be created/updated via a web interface; Data owners are responsible for the data they load; Data loaded at data zone level can be automatically aggregated to all higher level geographies.

28 Data Upload contd. External data loaders require a SG “sponsor”; Data owner is responsible for ensuring data is up to date and correct; Data must be disclosure controlled; Data must cover the whole of Scotland; Training takes around 1 hour.

29 Future Developments Mapping upgrade: –Tender process has begun on this with the aim of having an upgraded system in place by the end of the year; Admin System: –Longer term – user consultation and specification of requirements will start towards the end of the year; Charts and commentary: –Work on improved charts is underway; –Automatically generated commentary is a longer term project.
