2 Course Description This course has been structured to teach students the fundamentals of pre-Algebra. Topics of discussion will include: Connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division Completing the understanding of division of fractions Extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers Writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations Developing understanding of statistical thinking. 3 Grading Policy Students grades will be based as follows: A: 90-100, B: 80-89, C: 70-79, D: 60-69, F: 59 or below Tests are 40% of the grade Quizzes are 30% of the grade Projects/Carnegie is 20% Classwork /Homework is 10% of the grade

4 Class and Supplemental Materials Students are expected to bring: Pencil/ Red Pen / Highlighter 3 ring Folder with textbook pages of current chapter Previous class notes Any supplemental material Class Fees Students are to use the textbook set of Bridges to Algebra by Carnegie Learning Students are expected watch any supplemental videos that are posted on school website. This supplemental videos are usually given before a topic so we can have a basis for conversation at the beginning of next class.

5 Carnegie Online Cognitive Tutor www.carnegielearning.com Students are expected to bring complete their Carnegie weekly assignments by Sunday nights at 8pm. Only technical assistance a teacher can give is to reset password or restart and unresponsive problem. (*Must be given notice during school week.) 6 Student Expectations Students are to come prepared and ready to learn After 3 verbal warnings and a call home student will receive a detention for not improving or modifying his/her behavior. Electronic devices are not allowed in class. (It will be confiscated and sent to the main office per school policy). Eating and Drinking are not allowed in my classroom unless a student has a valid medical reason that has been cleared by the office (i.e. a diabetic student). Bathroom passes are for emergencies only- will be given four passes per nine week unless a student has a valid medical reason that has been cleared by the office. Complete their homework daily and continually studying for the course.

9 Parent Volunteer Hours Parents can bring in supplies from my wish list (attach the original receipt to the bag, along with your child’s name and student ID). Opportunities for parent hours (ex. Field trips, school events).
