Cell Division Mitosis

Chromosomes  Eukaryotes  Found in the nucleus  Contain most of the genes  Made up of two sister chromatids, joined by a centromere  Prokaryotes  Found in the cytoplasm  Contains most of the genes  Made up of a circular single strand  Plasmid contains additional genes

Cell Cycle  Interphase Mitosis  Prophase  Metaphase  Anaphase  Telophase

G0

Interphase Synthesis of organelles necessary for cell division (centrioles) Chromosomes replicate Growth and development G2(Gap 2) S(synthes is) G1(Gap 1)

Prophase  Chromosomes condense, become visible  Mitotic spindles begin to form in the cytoplasm (microtubules)  Nuclear membrane and nucleolus break down

Prophase  Chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers at the centromeres.  Chromosomes start to move towards the center of the cell.

Metaphase  Chromosomes are lined up in the middle of the cell.  Imaginary line is called the metaphase plate.

Anaphase  Centromeres divide  Sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell.  Each pole of the cell now contains identical copies of chromosomes.

Telophase  Nuclear envelopes form around each set of chromosomes  Chromosomes uncoil.  Cytokinesis - equal distribution of the cytoplasm between the two daughter cells.

1 - prophase 2 - metaphase 3 - anaphase 4 - telophase 5 - interphase (cell is not in mitosis)

End result of Mitosis Two identical daughter cells Diploid = 2n
