3. Science Inquiry based Science will be taught in quarters one and four. Four units: Cells Rocks and Minerals ChemistrySoil Grades will be based on midterm and common assessments (85%) and team tests (15%).

4. If you would like to see what we are doing in class, have your child show you in his/her binder. Study guide sheets with the learning targets are found in the front of students’ binders. We fill them out and complete each sheet as we move through the unit. Learning targets are aligned with CCSS. Science

5. Social Studies Sixth grade social studies is a study of the regions and people of the Eastern Hemisphere. Social Studies will be taught in quarters two and three.

7. Social Studies Ask your child what he or she learned that day. Referring to his or her binder is a great place to start. Help your child study his or her Learning Targets throughout the course of the unit. Play the Jeopardy game that is provided on class websites before each assessment.

8. English Language Arts Common Core Standards Integration of reading and writing When students are learning about reading, they are writing about their reading. When students are learning about writing, they are reading to improve their writing. Reading and writing go together.

19. Because of the shear number of indicators for 6 th grade math, students can expect to have homework every night. Accelerated students will have double the amount of homework. Please encourage your child to ask questions during math class. We frequently circulate our rooms during math periods and check in with kids, so this would be a good time for your child to call us over for extra help. Math

20. 85% of your child’s grade will be designated for Common Assessments. Chapter Tests (Three – Five Per Quarter) CheckPoint Quizzes (Two Per Quarter)* 15% of your child’s grade will be designated for Team Tasks. Team Tests Team Projects *Students will have an opportunity to retake CheckPoint Quizzes one week later to increase their original score. 21. Your child’s grade is determined by weighted categories. The weight of each category used is multiplied by the student’s average for that category. Those products are summed together and divided by the total of the weighted categories in use. How that percent grade converts to a letter grade is based on the school grading scale. 24. Grading Interims will not be sent home this year. Student progress can be viewed through PowerSchool. Report Cards are sent home quarterly. Common Assessment grades make up the majority of the report card grade.

27. Technology Students are allowed to bring electronic devices to school to use in reading, science, social studies, and math. Misuse of technology: Phone rang in class, Facebook, texting, listening to music, playing a game, etc. Students must have access to computer/internet each night or they must come in early.

30. Conferences Just like last year, Orchard will first offer conferences to students who are struggling behaviorally or academically. After those have been scheduled, there will be an option for parents to schedule a conference.
